The highly anticipated 10th anniversary of the Vero Beach Film Festival brought a remarkable slate of independent cinema to the Treasure Coast, featuring a carefully curated lineup of 76 standout films. Among the celebrated features screened from April 9 to 12 was Love & Karma, an emotionally rich narrative that captivated local audiences and highlighted the festival’s commitment to diverse, global storytelling.
Co-founded by Jerusha Stewart and Susan Horn, the Vero Beach Film Festival has grown over the past decade into a premier cultural event for Indian River County. Now under the leadership of David Yakir, the milestone 10th-anniversary edition emphasized original works, cultural relevance, and technical excellence. Beyond the screening rooms, attendees enjoyed a variety of engaging community events, including a vibrant tiki-themed gathering, exclusive wine tastings, and a special anniversary dinner and awards program designed to celebrate emerging and established filmmakers.
Based on a compelling story by Celeste Friedman and written and directed by Giovanni Espiritu, Love & Karma was a notable highlight of the local festival. The film features a strong international ensemble cast that reflects its cross-cultural framework.
Standout cast members include:
- Jojo Riguerra, widely recognized for his role in the Filipino television series Ang Probinsyano, stepping in as the male lead.
- Belinda Panelo, former MTV Asia VJ, portraying Celeste Friedman.
- Academy Award-nominated actor Eric Roberts, known for his compelling work in Runaway Train.
- Bai Ling, celebrated for her dynamic roles in The Crow, Red Corner, and Anna and the King.
- Golden Globe nominee Joanna Pacuła, famous for her iconic role in Gorky Park.
At its core, Love & Karma explores universal themes: love at any age, mother-daughter relationships, friendship, societal expectations, cross-cultural connections, and second chances. The narrative reflects on how unexpected moments of connection shape identity, while engaging questions of timing, destiny, and personal transformation.
The film’s presentation in Vero Beach notably drew members of the Filipino American Association of the Treasure Coast, showcasing the strong local engagement and diverse audience the festival consistently attracts. This marks the third festival appearance for Love & Karma. Prior to arriving in Indian River County, the feature debuted at the Asian World Film Festival in Culver City and earned the award for Best First Time Sound & Music at the Tiger Tail Asian Film Festival in St. Petersburg.
As the Vero Beach Film Festival closes the curtain on its first decade, its continued expansion cements its vital role in the Treasure Coast’s arts and culture scene. The enthusiastic reception of films like Love & Karma signals a bright future for independent cinema right here in Vero Beach, continually bringing powerful, culturally resonant stories to our local community.
