Families in Vero Beach have a fresh, educational reason to visit the library this season. In a collaborative effort to boost early childhood reading skills through play, Indian River County officials have partnered with The Learning Alliance to unveil a new interactive literacy activity walk at the Indian River County Main Library.
This colorful new installation transforms the exterior of the library into an engaging learning environment. Dubbed the Moonshot’s ABC’s of IRC, the project utilizes sidewalk artwork to weave the alphabet into physical activities. Designed to capture the energy and imagination of children, the walkway features interactive elements such as hopscotch games and balance challenges, ensuring that learning letters becomes a full-body experience for young visitors.
To officially open the space to the public, a ribbon-cutting ceremony has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 3, at 11:00 a.m. The event will take place at the Main Library, located at 1600 21st Street in Vero Beach.
The initiative draws inspiration from the successful Born to Learn Walk at Jaycee Park, aiming to replicate that blend of recreation and education in a central location. To prepare for the installation, county crews removed existing benches and prepped the sidewalk surfaces, working closely with artists from the Moonshot Moment literacy movement to ensure a safe and vibrant space for families.
John A. Titkanich, the Indian River County Administrator, highlighted the importance of making literacy accessible and fun:
“We are excited to work with The Learning Alliance and Moonshot to bring this creative literacy experience to life. This installation offers a fun, educational opportunity for young learners and supports our shared goal of expanding access to literacy resources across the county.”
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the activity walk will be accessible to the public during regular library hours. This project stands as the latest effort by local partners to enhance public spaces while prioritizing educational development for Indian River County’s youth.
