The road to Jacksonville and the state championships begins this week for high school boys basketball teams across the Treasure Coast. For Vero Beach and surrounding Indian River and St. Lucie County programs, the stakes couldn’t be higher as district tournaments tip off. District champions secure automatic bids to the regional playoffs, while those who fall short must hope their rankings are strong enough to secure one of the four at-large bids available per region.

District 7-7A: The Battle for Vero Beach

The primary focus for Indian River County sports fans is District 7-7A. The Vero Beach High School Fighting Indians enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed, boasting a strong 18-6 record. They are joined in this highly competitive district by several familiar Treasure Coast rivals.

The full seeding for District 7-7A is as follows:

  • No. 1: Jupiter (22-3)
  • No. 2: Vero Beach (18-6)
  • No. 3: Centennial (15-10)
  • No. 4: Treasure Coast (12-9)
  • No. 5: Fort Pierce Central (12-10)

While specific dates for the matchups are currently listed as TBD, the tournament will be hosted by the higher seeds. The bracket sets up a potential high-stakes semifinal showdown between Vero Beach and Centennial. According to the breakdown provided by the Palm Beach Post, the postseason implications for this district are significant for the Fighting Indians.

“The Warriors [Jupiter] enter district play winners of their last five games… They’ll look to fend off a desperate team in the final depending on who wins the Vero-Centennial semifinal matchup as both teams are firmly on the regional bubble.”

This analysis suggests that for Vero Beach, a victory in the semifinals is critical not just for a shot at the district title, but to solidify a resume that is currently sitting on the regional bubble.

Around the Treasure Coast

Beyond Vero Beach, several other area teams are fighting for their playoff lives in neighboring districts.

In District 13-6A, Martin County (13-11) enters as the No. 2 seed, sitting behind Dwyer. Martin County is currently holding onto the No. 8 seed in the region, making a deep tournament run essential to defend their postseason spot.

In the small-school division of District 7-2A, Fort Pierce’s John Carroll Catholic (9-15) enters as the No. 3 seed. They face a challenging path, as they are set to play the No. 2 seed, Benjamin, in the semifinals. John Carroll is currently ranked No. 8 in Region 2-2A, meaning they are in a precarious position and likely need to play “spoiler” to keep their season alive.

Meanwhile, in District 13-1A, Hobe Sound’s The Pine School enters as the No. 6 seed with a 3-15 record, facing an uphill battle against top-seeded Atlantic Christian.

As the brackets are finalized and tip-off times are set, local fans should prepare for “win-or-go-home” basketball. For Vero Beach, the path is clear: survive the semifinals against Centennial and aim to upset Jupiter to guarantee a spot in the regionals.
