Fort Pierce, Fla. – A Monday afternoon shooting in Fort Pierce has left a 15-year-old boy hospitalized with serious injuries, prompting an active investigation by local authorities on the Treasure Coast. The incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. in the 900 block of North 23rd Street, near the intersection with Stoney’s BBQ.

According to the Fort Pierce Police Department, officers dispatched to the scene discovered the juvenile victim suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper back and shoulder. Despite the severity of the injuries, first responders reported that the teen was alert and conscious when they arrived.

St. Lucie County Fire Rescue transported the victim to a local hospital for stabilization. He was subsequently transferred to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he is currently undergoing surgery.

Preliminary reports from investigators indicate that the violence erupted while the victim was walking down the street with a group of friends. Police state that a second group approached and opened fire in their direction.

Major Santiago of the Fort Pierce Police Department provided critical context regarding the chaotic scene, noting that while gunfire was exchanged between the two parties, the injured teen was not an aggressor.

“Gunfire was exchanged between the teen’s group and another party when the 15-year-old victim was shot. Major Santiago confirmed the boy was unarmed and did not fire any shots.”

The suspects involved in the shooting fled the area immediately following the exchange and were gone before law enforcement arrived. As of Monday evening, no arrests have been announced, and the investigation remains active.
