Boating enthusiasts in Indian River County have a prime opportunity to enhance their nautical skills and legal knowledge this month. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 56 is hosting a comprehensive one-day boating safety class in Vero Beach, designed to equip local mariners with the essential information needed for safe vessel operation.

The training session is scheduled for Feb. 21 and will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The class will be held at American Legion Post 39, located at 1535 Old Dixie Highway.

This course is vital for anyone operating a vessel in Florida waters, particularly those required by law to carry certification. Participants who complete the training and pass the final exam will receive a certificate of completion as well as the official Florida state boater’s ID card. The curriculum covers a broad spectrum of safety and operational topics, ensuring boaters are prepared for various scenarios on the water.

Key topics covered in the course include:

  • Boat terminology and identification of specific vessel parts.
  • Essential pre-departure preparations, including fueling procedures and filing float plans.
  • Navigation rules and understanding waterway markers.
  • Legal requirements regarding vessel registration and operator age limits.
  • Emergency protocols for handling accidents or sudden weather changes.
  • The cost for the class is $25 per student. In an effort to encourage youth safety on the water, the Auxiliary is offering free admission for teens.

Registration is required to attend. To sign up or request more information, contact L.M. Vaughn by calling 772-559-9549 or emailing jimavaughn@gmail.com.
