The Emerson Center in Vero Beach continues its tradition of bringing compelling stories and world-class speakers to the Treasure Coast with an upcoming installment of its popular E-Series. This March, locals have the unique opportunity to experience a harrowing true story of maritime survival as New York Times bestselling author Michael J. Tougias presents a narrated visual journey based on his acclaimed book, Ten Hours Until Dawn.

Scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., this presentation promises to transport the audience back to one of the most ferocious weather events in American history. Tougias, a renowned storyteller of true survival and adventure, will recount the events of the Blizzard of 1978, a storm that brought the New England coast to a standstill and tested the limits of human endurance.

The narrative focuses on a specific, heart-pounding mission during the height of the storm.

During the height of the Blizzard of 1978, the pilot boat Can Do, with five men onboard, set out from Gloucester to assist a lost Coast Guard boat and an oil tanker in distress. The night was defined by 40-foot waves and 100 mph winds that challenged the courage and endurance of every soul at sea.

Tougias will go beyond a standard lecture format to provide a truly immersive experience for Vero Beach attendees. He utilizes a combination of panoramic slides, maps, and historic photographs to visually guide the audience through the storm’s progression and the movements of the vessels involved. Perhaps most chillingly, the presentation includes actual audio recordings from that fateful night, featuring the voices of the Coast Guard and the crew of the Can Do as they battled the elements.

Michael J. Tougias is an authority on maritime survival narratives, having authored 30 national bestsellers, including Fatal Forecast, Overboard!, and The Finest Hours—the latter of which was adapted into a major motion picture. His presentation at The Emerson Center will highlight the heroism, tragedy, and resilience displayed during the rescue attempt. Following the lecture, Tougias will be available for a book signing.
