Travelers flying out of the Treasure Coast will soon experience a significant shift in their departure routine. Driven by a surge in commercial airline service, the Vero Beach City Council voted on March 10 to transition all parking areas at the Vero Beach Regional Airport into leased, paid public parking. This move marks the end of the beloved free parking era but paves the way for essential infrastructure upgrades designed to accommodate the region’s growing travel demands.
The transition to a paid parking model will create up to 500 public spaces, accompanied by automated license plate reader technology, while generating an estimated $423,000 annually for the city airport fund.
Parking capacity at the regional airport has quickly become a pressing concern for local officials. Over the past year, the facility has transformed into a bustling travel hub for Indian River County residents. Breeze Airways has provided service out of Vero Beach since 2023, while JetBlue Airways recently launched flights to New York and Boston on December 11. Most recently, American Airlines inaugurated service to Charlotte, North Carolina, on February 12.
To manage the massive influx of passenger vehicles, the city is moving forward with an operator lease model. This strategy was recommended by airport staff as the most cost-effective approach, providing maximum revenue with the least financial risk to the city. Vero Beach-based Envision Parking Partners and Gainesville-based SafeParc have jointly proposed a comprehensive plan to transform and manage the airport’s lots.
Key details of the approved parking plan include:
The decision was heavily supported by the City Council, with only Councilman John Carroll voting in opposition. Carroll raised the question of whether airport staff should manage the lots internally to retain more revenue. However, Airport Operations Manager Brandon Dambeck clarified that internal management would not be cost-effective due to the necessary hiring of additional personnel and the overhead associated with the required technology.
While the exact operational start date for paid parking remains pending as City Manager Monte Falls guides the final lease negotiations and lot design approvals, travelers should prepare for this upcoming modernization. The proposed 15-year lease agreement ensures long-term operational stability, allowing the operator’s initial $5 million investment to be repaid over the first decade while streamlining the overall passenger experience at the Vero Beach Regional Airport.
