A devastating early-morning fire has deeply impacted the Indian River County animal rescue community, claiming the lives of eleven cats and a tortoise at the For the Love of Paws pet sanctuary in Fellsmere. Despite the heartbreaking loss, sanctuary directors and local residents are already rallying to rebuild the facility, demonstrating the profound resilience of the Treasure Coast community.
The deadly blaze ignited at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Monday at the rural sanctuary, located in the 14000 block of 109th Street, just north of County Road 512 and west of Interstate 95. The fire rapidly engulfed two side-by-side cottages that housed a total of fifteen cats. According to initial investigations by Indian River County Fire Rescue crews, the fire is believed to have been sparked by an electrical malfunction in an air conditioning unit.
In the midst of the billowing smoke and intense heat, an incredible act of bravery unfolded. Operation Director Ted Pankiewicz Jr. and his son, Ryder, who reside on the property just 200 feet from the destroyed cabins, rushed into the burning structure to save the trapped animals. They successfully rescued four cats, pulling a patio enclosure away from one of the burning cabins to reach the terrified pets.
In a terrifying display of the fire’s rapid spread, one cat named “Socks” caught fire while jumping through the flames into Pankiewicz Jr.’s arms. He quickly extinguished the flames by holding the cat tight against his chest, ultimately saving her life while sustaining second-degree burns to his own arms and elbows.
The four rescued cats remained hospitalized as of Tuesday, receiving critical veterinary care. As the physical cleanup begins, Executive Director Ted Pankiewicz Sr. envisions a stronger future for the local nonprofit. Rather than replacing the two lost cottages, the organization plans to construct a single, expansive facility that will consolidate the pet sanctuary and their vital pet food pantry under one roof.
The Indian River County community has rushed to support the sanctuary in its time of need. A GoFundMe campaign established to finance the new building has already seen massive success. The ongoing community response has highlighted several key points of local support:
- Over $32,000 was raised within the first few days, rapidly approaching the $45,000 fundraising goal to construct the new, consolidated facility.
- Outpourings of emotional support have flooded in for the sanctuary staff, particularly main animal caretaker Fawn Wittenrich, who was devastated by the loss of the animals.
- A renewed local focus has been placed on the charity’s core mission, which was founded in 2014 to provide safe shelter for the pets of elderly residents who can no longer care for them.
For the Love of Paws has long been a philanthropic pillar of the Vero Beach and Fellsmere areas, known for helping seniors and veterans pay unexpected veterinary bills. Additionally, their “Paws Meals on Wheels” program distributes more than 12,000 pounds of free pet food each month. While the physical sanctuary recovers, the organization continues to operate its food pantry on County Road 512 in Fellsmere and its thrift store on 12th Street in Vero Beach. Through the ashes of this tragedy, the unwavering support of the Treasure Coast ensures that this vital local charity will continue its mission to protect vulnerable animals.
