The Vero Beach and Gifford communities are mourning the loss of Freddie Woolfork, a cherished local leader, advocate, and the longtime director of public relations and facilities operations at the Gifford Youth Achievement Center. Woolfork, who passed away on March 11, leaves behind a profound legacy of youth empowerment and community service across Indian River County.

Freddie Woolfork’s commitment to the Gifford community and his efforts to support and uplift local youth have left a lasting impact, touching the lives of thousands of children through his dedicated work.

A proud product of the local educational system, Woolfork’s early years were spent at Gifford High School. When the school closed in the late 1960s during local desegregation efforts, he and his classmates faced a difficult transition during their junior year. Despite the challenges of the era, Woolfork persevered and emerged as a student leader during his single year at Vero Beach High School. He later went on to graduate from Florida A&M University, bringing his education and talents right back to the Treasure Coast.

Woolfork was widely recognized as a lifelong advocate for the Gifford community. He was a constant, positive presence at local government meetings, community events, and fundraisers. Working tirelessly to bridge gaps and provide essential resources for local youth, he collaborated with various nonprofits, including the Gifford Youth Achievement Center and the United Way.

Beyond his professional and civic achievements, Woolfork is fondly remembered for his vibrant love of music and the spoken word. He frequently shared his musical talents at community gatherings, notably playing instruments during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. parades. His passion extended to writing and arranging music, contributing original compositions to the Vero Beach High School band and his graduating class, while also performing in local bands and his church. Friends and family also recall his positive, pithy phrases—wisdom passed down from his mother and community elders that he freely shared with others.

The community will gather to honor his memory and celebrate his life at St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church, located at 4350 38th Ave. in Vero Beach. The scheduled memorial services include:

  • Community Wake: March 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Homegoing Service: March 21 at noon.

As Vero Beach bids farewell to one of its most dedicated advocates, Freddie Woolfork’s uplifting spirit, musical contributions, and enduring dedication to Indian River County’s youth will continue to inspire future generations.
