Longtime Vero Beach resident and artist Timothy J. Sanchez is inviting the local community into his vibrant creative realm with a new exhibition titled Reconstructed Paintings. The innovative collection is currently on display at the Center for Spiritual Care in Vero Beach and will remain open to the public through April 30.

Sanchez, who has called Vero Beach home for nearly 25 years, brings a unique perspective to this exhibition by seamlessly blending collage and painting. Instead of discarding unfinished canvases, he salvages the successful elements—tearing compelling passages of paper or cutting canvas with scissors—and reconfigures these scraps into stunning, non-objective creations.

The exhibit is primarily collage, where many are conceptual because my thought process is as important as the structural development. I’m essentially a non-objective artist, so my process starts with thoughts rather than objects.

Building these complex works requires rigorous artistic discipline. Sanchez likens his structural approach to the methodology of renowned painters like John Singer Sargent, ensuring each piece has a solid foundation to support its dynamic surface flourishes. Influences from contemporary American art icons like Robert Rauschenberg are also evident in how Sanchez skillfully balances and arrests visual energy across his canvases.

The exhibition features several standout pieces that demand extended viewing to fully appreciate their intricate layers:

  • Floral Interference: This piece utilizes delicate layers and intentional scratches to suggest a gauze-like veil, beneath which vibrant floral shapes struggle to blossom amidst a perimeter of flourishing life.
  • Polychrome Study: A striking explosion of colors and forms that ultimately blend into a highly cohesive and captivating abstract composition.

Sanchez credits his extensive educational background—including a Master of Fine Arts from Long Island University under noted colorists and undergraduate studies at SUNY Buffalo—for his foundational skills. However, it is the subtropical sunlight, stunning ocean coastline, and aesthetic graciousness of Vero Beach that continually fuel his modern inspirations. He actively champions the local arts scene, praising the continued growth of the Vero Beach Museum of Art and recognizing the Center for Spiritual Care as a vital powerhouse in the community’s cultural landscape.

Art enthusiasts and local residents are encouraged to experience this visual smorgasbord firsthand. Reconstructed Paintings can be viewed at the Center for Spiritual Care on weekends between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., or by scheduled appointment.
