A swift and coordinated response by local emergency crews prevented a major disaster and saved a furry friend over the weekend on the Treasure Coast. Firefighters from the St. Lucie County Fire District successfully extinguished a fierce commercial structure fire in Fort Pierce on Saturday afternoon, rescuing a trapped cat in the process.

First responders executed a rapid attack on a third-floor blaze, bringing the fire under control in under twenty minutes and ensuring no neighboring units were lost to the flames.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the 2000 block of Oleander Boulevard at 12:44 p.m. following reports of a severe structural fire. Upon arrival, crews were met with aggressive flames and intense heat radiating from a third-floor unit, with heavy orange firelight visibly pushing through the structure’s doorway and windows. Realizing the immediate threat to the adjoining spaces, a second alarm was promptly activated to bring additional resources to the scene.

The tactical timeline of the response underscores the incredible efficiency of our local Treasure Coast firefighters:

  • 12:44 p.m. – Initial dispatch to the Oleander Boulevard commercial property.
  • 12:54 p.m. – A second alarm is called to secure further emergency personnel and equipment.
  • 1:03 p.m. – The main body of the blaze is successfully contained and brought under control.

Firefighters tactically positioned themselves both on the ground and directly outside the affected unit, utilizing exterior hose lines to aggressively suppress the fire and prevent it from extending into neighboring businesses and residences. Amidst the intense and hazardous conditions, crews managed to safely retrieve one cat from the heavily damaged third-floor unit, providing a much-needed silver lining to the destructive incident.

While the fire was effectively contained before it could compromise the entire complex, the secondary damage left a significant impact. The American Red Cross has been called in to assist the occupants of six distinct units who were displaced or impacted by the resulting smoke, water, and fire damage.

The exact cause of the Saturday afternoon blaze remains unknown. The incident has been officially turned over to the local Fire Marshal’s Office, which is currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine how the fire sparked.
