The local sports landscape across the Treasure Coast has just witnessed a seismic shift. For decades, the Vero Beach High School girls lacrosse program has been the undisputed standard of excellence in the region. However, a surging squad from Jensen Beach has just rewritten local sports history, breaking a towering 23-year streak and setting the stage for a thrilling, high-stakes matchup right here in Vero Beach.
A Historic Upset at the Citrus Bowl
On March 4, the Jensen Beach Falcons accomplished what no public school from South Florida has ever done: they defeated Vero Beach. Stepping onto the turf at the Citrus Bowl, the Falcons delivered a stunning 14-5 victory. To understand the magnitude of this win, one has to look back 8,357 days. The last time a Treasure Coast team bested Vero Beach was when St. Edward’s pulled off the feat on April 17, 2003.
We’ve gotten beaten up by them over the years a lot, but this is the best team I ever had. I didn’t expect to beat them 14-5 at their place, but the girls were ecstatic running off the field.
The victory holds special significance for Jensen Beach head coach Bob Windsor, who previously spent seven seasons as an assistant coach for Vero Beach. Entering the game with laser-like focus, the Falcons lost the opening draw but quickly took control through rapid fast-break scoring, excellent defensive communication, and aggressive ride players forcing immediate turnovers.
Building a Faster, Stronger Roster
The historic win over Vero Beach is the crown jewel of an extraordinary season for Jensen Beach, boasting an impressive 13-1 record while outscoring opponents by a combined margin of 222-65. Interestingly, the team’s singular loss—a 22-2 defeat to American Heritage early in the season—served as a crucial catalyst. The blowout exposed the Falcons to elite, college-level speed, prompting a complete shift toward playing, thinking, and reacting faster on the field.
This high-speed approach is flawlessly executed by a unique blend of seasoned upperclassmen and explosive young talent. Standout contributors making waves on the Treasure Coast this season include:
- Kai Valko: The senior attacker and University of South Florida signee is the most prolific scorer in program history. With over 300 career goals—including 42 this season—Valko has stepped up as an uplifting, confidence-building leader for her younger teammates.
- Eva Walser: A sophomore who only picked up the sport in the eighth grade, Walser’s relentless work ethic has paid off; she currently leads the team with an astounding 51 goals.
- Anna Shirk: The junior standout, who joined the squad after Pine School dropped its lacrosse program, is described by Windsor as the most intelligent and effective on-ball defender he has ever coached.
- Natalie Gavini: The junior goaltender has been a steadfast final line of defense, successfully stopping 55 percent of the shots directed her way.
The Next Challenge: St. Edward’s Takes the Stage
While the Citrus Bowl upset serves as a massive checkpoint, the season is far from over. The title of the area’s absolute best will be put to the test in another highly anticipated local clash. On Friday, March 27, at 5 p.m., Jensen Beach will travel to Vero Beach once again—this time to face off against St. Edward’s.
This matchup pits the Treasure Coast’s two top-ranked powerhouses against one another. St. Edward’s currently holds a 7-3 record and sits at an impressive eighth in the state rankings, while Jensen Beach ranks eighteenth overall. For the visiting Falcons, a victory against St. Edward’s would not only cement their regional dominance but also tie their all-time program record for wins in a single season.
As local lacrosse fans eagerly anticipate Friday’s showdown, one thing is certain: the competitive spirit of Treasure Coast athletics is truly stronger than ever.
