Looking for a creative weekend escape just a short, scenic drive up Highway A1A from Vero Beach? Indian River County and Treasure Coast residents are invited to embrace their artistic side at a special hands-on workshop located just up the coast.

On Sunday, April 12, the Barrier Island Center will host a Make-Your-Own-Turtle glass workshop led by local glass artist Delynn Ellis. The sanctuary, situated directly on the barrier island, offers the perfect oceanic backdrop for crafting your very own sea-inspired artwork.

During this engaging class, participants will learn the fundamentals of cutting and designing with colorful art glass. The workshop explores the fascinating process of glass fusing, which involves arranging delicate glass pieces and melting them together in a high-temperature kiln.

Students will have the opportunity to select their own vibrant colors and design a personalized, fused-glass turtle measuring approximately three by four inches, combining creative expression with a relaxing atmosphere.

Here are the important event details for locals planning to attend:

  • Location: The Barrier Island Center, 8385 South Highway A1A, Melbourne Beach (located just north of the Sebastian Inlet).
  • Date: Sunday, April 12.
  • Cost: The instructional class is completely free, with a $30 fee required for materials.
  • Capacity: Space is strictly limited to 20 students, ensuring a personalized and guided experience.
  • Age Requirements: Children are welcome to participate, provided they are accompanied by a parent who is also enrolled in the class.

After assembling the turtles, all creations will be fired off-site in a professional kiln. Participants can easily return to the sanctuary the following week to pick up their finished pieces, or they can arrange for prepaid shipping straight to their home. For those looking to add extra flair, optional supplies will be available for purchase during the class to transform the glass turtle into a stunning ornament, garden stake, napkin weight, or framed piece of art.
