Indian River County officials are calling on local residents, business owners, and coastal stakeholders to play an active role in shaping the future of the region’s beautiful Atlantic shoreline. The Indian River County Natural Resources Department will be hosting a comprehensive public workshop to discuss critical updates to the area’s Beach Preservation Plan, a science-based strategy essential for the ongoing monitoring, restoration, and management of the county’s 22.4 miles of coastline.
With coastal environments constantly evolving due to storm impacts and sea-level changes, public input remains a vital component of local environmental stewardship. The upcoming event offers attendees a unique opportunity to learn about ongoing changes to the shoreline, review past beach restoration efforts, and evaluate coastal risk analyses alongside county staff and technical experts.
Public Workshop Details
- Date: Tuesday, April 14
- Time: 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM
- Location: Indian River Shores Community Center, located at 6001 Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway (A1A), Indian River Shores, FL 32963
The evening will commence with a brief public meeting of the Beach and Shores Advisory Committee. Following the presentation, the event will transition into an open-house format. Residents can explore informational exhibits, view detailed posters, and engage directly with coastal experts to discuss vital topics such as storm resilience, shoreline shifts, environmental protection, and long-term alternative management strategies.
Community participation ensures the updated Beach Preservation Plan continues to reflect local priorities while effectively balancing robust coastal protection, environmental stewardship, and continuous public access to our beaches.
Originally adopted in 1988, the Beach Preservation Plan has served as the foundational guide for coastal management in Indian River County for decades. It is periodically updated to align with the latest advancements in coastal science and shifting environmental conditions. Recognizing that community input is central to the planning process, the county provides multiple avenues for residents to share valuable feedback, including an online comment form for those who prefer to submit their thoughts digitally.
