Vero Beach High School football fans have plenty of reasons to be excited about the upcoming season, especially with the rising national spotlight on their hometown quarterback. Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV, a standout signal-caller for the Vero Beach squad, is making major waves in collegiate recruiting circles, with the University of Notre Dame suddenly emerging as a clear frontrunner for his commitment.
Following a highly successful recruiting weekend in South Bend, the Fighting Irish appear to be riding a powerful wave of momentum. Prior to the campus visit, Notre Dame was considered a dark horse to land the talented Treasure Coast athlete. However, the narrative has shifted dramatically. Recruiting analysts across major sports platforms, including Brian Dohn and Steve Wiltfong, have recently logged crystal ball predictions pointing toward Monds choosing Notre Dame as his future collegiate home.
To say Notre Dame made a big move this weekend would be a massive understatement. While there isn’t a firm timeline to make a decision, it appears that Notre Dame is in the driver’s seat to land Monds.
The 6-foot-2, 224-pound quarterback is widely regarded as an elite national prospect. After recently reclassifying from the 2028 recruiting class—where he was ranked as the number one overall quarterback—Monds is now a highly sought-after member of the 2027 class. According to the 247 Sports Composite, Monds holds a coveted four-star rating and is currently positioned as:
- The No. 19 quarterback prospect in the nation
- The No. 25 overall player in the state of Florida
- The No. 259 overall recruit in the country
During his 2025 campaign, Monds flashed immense potential in his five appearances. Serving as the primary backup to dynamic athlete and recent Florida State signee Efrem White, Monds capitalized on every opportunity under center. He completed a highly efficient 71 percent of his passes, connecting on 45 of 63 attempts for 691 yards. Showcasing exceptional decision-making for a young player, Monds threw seven passing touchdowns with zero interceptions, while also adding a rushing touchdown to his resume.
The recruiting battle for the Vero Beach star features a staggering list of powerhouse college football programs. Beyond Notre Dame, Monds has collected scholarship offers from top-tier institutions, including Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, and prominent in-state rivals like Florida, Florida State, and Miami.
With a deeply talented Vero Beach High School roster returning for the fall season, the local community can expect a thrilling year under the Friday night lights. All eyes in Indian River County will undoubtedly be on Monds as he takes full command of the offense, navigates his high-profile recruitment, and continues to build his already impressive Treasure Coast legacy.
