The Vero Beach High School boys’ lacrosse team is experiencing a dominant era under veteran leadership, recently claiming their latest district championship and setting their sights on regional redemption.

Four years ago, the trajectory of the Vero Beach High School lacrosse program shifted significantly with the arrival of head coach Rory Whipple. Bringing an impressive 50 years of coaching experience to the local high school team, Whipple’s extensive background includes prominent tenures at Bryant University and the University of Tampa. During his collegiate coaching career, he amassed a formidable 228-174 record and developed more than 20 All-American players.

This elite level of experience and an “old school” intensity have deeply resonated with the Vero Beach squad. According to team members, the rigorous coaching style required an adjustment period but has ultimately proven invaluable to their on-field success.

It was definitely a rude awakening from my middle school coach, but I think it’s really good for us because he has so much experience with lacrosse.

Under Whipple’s strict but effective guidance, the Indian River County program has reached new heights, securing five district titles over the past six years. The team’s recent performance perfectly highlighted their regional dominance, as they easily dismantled Lake Nona with an 18-4 victory to secure this season’s district championship.

The team’s ongoing success is built on a foundation of unyielding defense and a powerhouse offense. The Vero Beach boys have scored a remarkable 223 points this season. Key offensive playmakers driving this high-scoring season include attacker Zack Franco, Tate Farrow, and midfielder Austin Banzhaf. Franco notes that the seamless trust between the defensive and offensive units has been a major catalyst for their winning streak.

With very few weaknesses left to address, the Vero Beach lacrosse team is now intensely focused on their upcoming regional matchup against Lake Mary. This specific game carries extra emotional weight for the local athletes and the wider Treasure Coast sports community. Lake Mary is the same school that heartbreakingly defeated the Vero Beach football team on a last-second Hail Mary pass to win the recent state championship.

For dual-sport athletes like Banzhaf, the upcoming regional lacrosse game is deeply personal:

With me being on the football team, it’s a strong thing for me. I really want to go into the game and beat them up.
