The high school track and field postseason has officially arrived on the Treasure Coast, and local athletes are already making an undeniable mark. Across four recent district meets, area high schools showcased their speed, strength, and agility, bringing home a combined 38 first-place event finishes to start the sport’s second season.

The Vero Beach girls track and field team secured the District 8-4A championship, leading a wave of Treasure Coast success that saw 38 first-place finishes and multiple runner-up team placements across Indian River, St. Lucie, and Martin counties.

Vero Beach Girls Capture the Crown

The absolute standout performance of the district cycle came from the Vero Beach High School girls track and field team. The squad cruised to the District 8-4A crown, amassing an impressive 161.5 points to comfortably distance themselves from the competition. Much of this success was driven by the spectacular performance of junior sprinter Taylor-Nicole Overton. Overton was virtually unstoppable on the track, sweeping the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter sprints, and helping secure a victory in the 1,600-meter relay.

Vero Beach also dominated the field events. Azariah Gibson took first place in the long jump and the 400-meter hurdles, Alexandra Messam won the triple jump, and Zenaiya Francis claimed the javelin title.

Runner-Up Finishes for Sebastian River and St. Edward’s

While Vero Beach claimed the top team prize, several other Indian River County and neighboring schools delivered fantastic runner-up finishes.

The Sebastian River boys team placed second overall in District 13-3A. They were anchored by powerhouse thrower Donnie Bryant, who swept both the shot put and discus events, and strong sprint performances by Maurice Mewborn and D’Marcus Parker-Roach. The Sebastian River girls also saw notable field success, with Joniah and Jamaiya Holson taking the top two spots in the shot put.

Meanwhile, the St. Edward’s girls team earned a strong second-place team finish in District 13-1A. Distance runner Jacquelyn Perrin was a major point contributor for St. Edward’s, winning both the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter races. Teammate Mia Perez secured valuable points by taking victories in both the discus and javelin throws.

Standout Boys Performances

On the boys’ side for Vero Beach, distance runner Andrew Youssef achieved a notable double victory in District 8-4A by taking first place in both the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs. Isaiah Cummings also had a stellar meet, winning both the long jump and triple jump.

At St. Edward’s, John Curley mirrored the success of the girls’ distance team by winning the boys’ 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter races in District 13-1A. To the south, St. Lucie West Centennial’s boys team took home a team runner-up finish in District 8-4A, paced by sweeping sprint victories from Emmanuel Dorelus Jr. in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes.
