Celebrating the Treasure Coast’s All-Time Baseball Greats
The Treasure Coast of Florida has long been a fertile training ground for exceptional athletic talent, and the baseball diamond is no exception. As part of a larger initiative by USA TODAY Sports to honor the 250 greatest American sports figures for the upcoming United States semiquincentennial, a spotlight is shining brightly on the athletes and coaches who have shaped our local communities.
World Series champions, Gold Glove winners, and Florida state champions have written an extensive baseball history for the Treasure Coast.
From high school standouts to Major League Baseball legends, the region—spanning Indian River, St. Lucie, and Martin counties—has produced a remarkable roster of trailblazers. For residents and visitors of Vero Beach and the surrounding areas, local high school and collegiate baseball is a deeply ingrained part of the community lifestyle, bringing neighbors together under the stadium lights.
Vero Beach and Indian River County Standouts
Vero Beach High School and Indian River State College have been pivotal in developing top-tier talent. Some of the most notable local figures include:
- Alex Cobb: Before enjoying a prolific 13-year MLB career, Cobb was a dual-sport star at Vero Beach High School, shining on the baseball diamond and playing quarterback for the football team. Drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2006, Cobb reached the majors in 2011 and was named a National League All-Star with the San Francisco Giants in 2023. He boasts over 1,100 career strikeouts.
- Bryan Rahal: Currently setting the gold standard for Treasure Coast high school coaches, Rahal has amassed 295 wins in just 14 seasons leading the Vero Beach High School Indians. Under his leadership, the team has reached the state semifinals twice in the last three seasons. Rahal is steadily chasing the all-time Vero Beach coaching win record of 462, held by his predecessor, Jeff Steinman.
- Mike Easom: The undisputed heart of Indian River State College baseball, Easom spent 31 years as head coach, securing an incredible 1,036 wins, nine conference championships, and four state titles. His legacy is permanently cemented in Indian River County, with IRSC retiring his No. 4 jersey and officially naming the baseball field in his honor in 2022.
Wider Treasure Coast Baseball Legends
Beyond Indian River County, the greater Treasure Coast region has cultivated baseball legends who have reached the absolute pinnacle of the sport.
- Charles Johnson Jr.: A Fort Pierce Westwood graduate who played under his father, Johnson went on to become one of MLB’s greatest defensive catchers. A two-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner, he played 123 consecutive games without an error during the Florida Marlins’ 1997 World Series championship run.
- Michael Brantley: This Fort Pierce Central alumnus and 2022 World Series champion with the Houston Astros carved out a 15-year MLB career as one of baseball’s most reliable hitters, earning five All-Star nods and a Silver Slugger award.
- Rick Ankiel: One of baseball’s greatest comeback stories began at Port St. Lucie High School. Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, Ankiel overcame severe pitching control issues by entirely reinventing himself as a hard-hitting Major League outfielder.
- Scott Proctor: Hailing from Martin County High School, Proctor pitched for eight MLB seasons, notably leading the American League in relief appearances in 2006 while serving as the premier setup man for the New York Yankees bullpen.
- Ed Hearn: Another Fort Pierce Central star, Hearn reached the peak of the sport as a member of the legendary 1986 World Series champion New York Mets.
A Legacy of Exceptional Coaching
The region’s athletic success is heavily anchored by dedicated educators and coaches. Mike Harper, an electrician by trade, built a formidable program at South Fork, capturing a state title in 2009. Meanwhile, John Carroll Catholic has been guided by historic leaders like Rick Dixon, who earned 430 career coaching wins across multiple local schools, and Clyde Russell, the only Treasure Coast high school baseball coach to win multiple state titles.
Whether you are relocating to Vero Beach or are a long-time Treasure Coast resident, the local sports culture offers a rich, continuing legacy. The dedication of these athletes and coaches highlights the strong community spirit and tradition of excellence that defines Florida’s Atlantic coast.
