A terrifying medical emergency at a Treasure Coast high school turned into a remarkable story of teamwork and survival, highlighting the critical importance of emergency preparedness in our local schools.

On April 23, the unthinkable happened at Fort Pierce Central High School. During a routine physical education class, a student named Eduardo Ortiz suddenly collapsed. He fell unconscious and had no pulse. What followed was a rapid, highly coordinated response from school faculty and local law enforcement that ultimately saved the young man’s life.

Within minutes of the medical episode, a diverse team of campus personnel rushed to Ortiz’s side to administer life-saving measures. The heroic rapid response group included:

  • Physical Education Teachers: Mike Watkins, Katie Clive, and Jeannie Glenton
  • School Nurses: Trurlette Noble and Latoya Wilder
  • School Resource Deputies: Blake Behrsin and RD Lyons

The impromptu team immediately sprang into action, seamlessly blending their skills to perform CPR and deploy an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Their relentless and immediate efforts paid off when Ortiz finally gasped for air and regained his breath.

“We didn’t care what anybody title was, our goal was to save this kid’s life, and we work together as a team to do that,” stated school nurse Trurlette Noble, capturing the unwavering dedication of the campus staff.

While first responders often bear the primary weight of medical emergencies, the immediate intervention of teachers and medical faculty in those initial critical minutes proved essential. School Resource Deputy Blake Behrsin praised the civilian staff’s willingness to jump into the fray, noting that while the faculty are not expected to handle the same duties as law enforcement, they did not hesitate to help save a life.

Ortiz is currently recovering at home following the harrowing ordeal. The Fort Pierce community, along with the wider Treasure Coast region, is celebrating the swift actions of these everyday heroes. Fort Pierce Central Principal Eldrique Gardner expressed the school’s collective relief and ongoing support for the recovering student.

“We’re rooting for him in a speedy recovery, and we cannot wait until he walks the halls of Fort Pierce Central High School,” Gardner shared.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder for the entire community regarding the life-saving value of CPR certification and the absolute necessity of maintaining accessible AED devices on all local school campuses.
