A Day of Innovation at Vero Beach High School

The skies above Vero Beach High School recently buzzed with excitement as student innovators and aspiring aviators gathered for the 3rd Annual Florida East Coast Drone Competition. Hosted by Youth Guidance, the electrifying event brought together local students, educators, and community partners for an immersive day dedicated to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning.

Four High-Stakes STEM Challenges

Throughout the day-long event, participating Indian River County teams went head-to-head, putting their technical abilities and strategic thinking to the test across a series of rigorous missions. The competitive challenges designed to test precision and coding included:

  • Teamwork Mission: Collaborative navigation through a complex obstacle course to achieve specific objectives.
  • Piloting Skills Mission: A high-speed challenge where students piloted drones through an obstacle course to maximize points within a strict 60-second time limit.
  • Autonomous Flight Mission: A coding and programming test where teams directed their drones to independently navigate the course without manual controls.
  • Communication Mission: A comprehensive presentation where students faced a panel of judges, participating in interviews and presenting mission logbooks that detailed their technical strategies.

Community Collaboration and Educational Impact

Indian River County Superintendent of Schools Dr. David K. Moore opened the event by emphasizing the transformative nature of hands-on STEM education and the value of robust local partnerships.

The collaboration between Youth Guidance, the School District of Indian River County, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County is exactly the kind of community partnership that transforms young lives. When our students get hands-on experience flying drones and solving real engineering challenges, they’re building the critical thinking and technical skills that will carry them into future careers.

Thanks to the dedicated leadership of Youth Guidance Teen Director Richard Butler, who provided extensive training and consultation, the competition successfully doubled in size this year, growing from three to six local teams. Participating groups included representatives from Youth Guidance, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County, Oslo Middle School, Gifford Middle School, Sebastian River Middle School, and Fellsmere Academy.

Competition Results and Top Honors

The students showcased incredible piloting precision and teamwork, with several local schools taking home well-deserved recognition:

  • Overall Champion: Oslo Middle School
  • Airmanship Award: Youth Guidance
  • Teamwork Challenge: Fellsmere Academy
  • Skills Mission: Boys and Girls Club of Vero Beach
  • Autonomous Mission: Gifford Middle School
  • Communications Mission: Gifford Middle School

Empowering the Next Generation

The success of the 3rd Annual Florida East Coast Drone Competition was made possible through a generous grant from the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation and was spearheaded by the Next Generation Leadership Academy in partnership with Youth Guidance. To elevate the educational experience, participating middle and high schoolers received direct mentorship from engineering students representing Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the Florida Institute of Technology, and the University of Central Florida.

Founded in 1973, Youth Guidance continues to be a cornerstone of the Indian River County community. The organization is dedicated to breaking the cycle of generational poverty by providing mentoring, academic support, and career pathways for youths aged 6 to 24 through dynamic initiatives like the Pathways Afterschool Program, Summer Enrichment Program, and vital pre-apprenticeship training in local construction trades and culinary arts.
