In a powerful demonstration of community support, the United Way of Indian River County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has successfully concluded another transformative tax season. For hardworking families and retirees across Vero Beach and the surrounding areas, the program delivered substantial financial relief, returning more than $2.05 million in tax refunds directly to local residents.

Designed to help families maximize their returns while completely eliminating the cost of filing, the VITA program serves as a crucial economic lifeline. This year, the initiative provided free tax preparation services to nearly 2,000 individuals and families throughout Indian River County. With the average client earning an annual income of $29,727, the resulting average tax refund of $1,253 represents a significant and necessary boost to local household budgets.

Meredith Egan, CEO of the United Way of Indian River County, highlighted the profound local impact of these savings, particularly for those facing economic strain.

“For ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households and families living paycheck to paycheck, these dollars are critical. When the cost of essentials continues to rise, a tax refund or savings on preparation fees can help families catch up on bills, reduce debt, or create a small financial cushion. VITA helps ensure our neighbors keep more of what they have earned.”

Beyond standard refunds, the dedicated VITA team ensured that locals capitalized on all eligible financial benefits. Here is a closer look at the program’s impressive impact for the recent tax season:

  • Total Refunds: Over $2.05 million returned to Indian River County residents.
  • Tax Credits Secured: More than $639,000 claimed, heavily featuring Earned Income Tax Credits, Childcare Tax Credits, and Education Credits.
  • Preparation Savings: An estimated $425,480 saved by clients who otherwise would have paid out-of-pocket for retail tax preparation services.
  • Community Reach: 1,934 local individuals and families received expert, hands-on assistance.

The backbone of this massive undertaking was a dedicated team of 44 IRS-certified volunteers. These local heroes contributed an astonishing 3,207 hours of their time to support their neighbors. Their expertise and compassionate service yielded incredibly high satisfaction rates, with 91 percent of surveyed clients reporting an excellent experience and 86 percent returning to use the service again, highlighting a deep foundation of trust within the community.

This annual program operates as a core component of the United Way’s mission to improve financial stability across Indian River County. The massive logistical effort is also made possible through the generous local sponsorships of Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital and the accounting firm of Offutt Barton Schlitt, CPA.

For Vero Beach residents looking to secure their financial footing, or for those interested in giving back to the community by volunteering for the upcoming tax season, the United Way welcomes your involvement.
