The Treasure Coast is poised to take a massive leap into the future of space exploration. According to the recently drafted 2026 Port of Fort Pierce Master Plan, the city is eyeing a major transformation that could position the local port as a critical support hub for offshore rocket recovery operations. With Florida’s aerospace industry booming, major space pioneers like SpaceX and Blue Origin may soon find a vital new operational home right here in St. Lucie County.

The draft plan looks beyond the port’s traditional yacht maintenance operations, laying out how Fort Pierce could support the vessels and waterfront infrastructure needed to recover reusable rockets launched from the Space Coast.

Driven by the rapid expansion of reusable rocket technology, Port Canaveral—currently the primary hub for such operations—is experiencing significant pressure and a high demand for berths, staging spaces, and heavy-lift infrastructure. To alleviate this bottleneck, the Port of Fort Pierce is stepping up as an ideal alternative. Local officials and planners have highlighted the area’s deepwater access, available waterfront real estate, and robust existing marine industrial base as key advantages for the region.

If approved, the proposed Launch Vehicle Recovery Facility would significantly alter the local economic landscape. The specialized facility’s blueprint includes:

  • A heavy-load wharf measuring approximately 700 feet in length, built to support massive cranes and recovered rocket booster components.
  • Up to 8 to 10 acres of secure, upland space dedicated to storage, laydown, and daily operations.
  • Waterfront infrastructure specifically capable of supporting autonomous drone ships, fairing recovery vessels, and other essential marine support craft.
  • Controlled access points from North 2nd Street to maintain security and operational efficiency.

Importantly, county planners are prioritizing long-term economic flexibility. The heavy-duty infrastructure designed for aerospace recovery could be adapted in the future for import/export activities or expanded marine repair work, ensuring the Treasure Coast economy does not become overly reliant on a single industry. The same skilled labor and heavy equipment currently utilized by the port’s main tenant, Derecktor Shipyards, would seamlessly transition to supporting these high-tech marine vessels.

While aerospace recovery is dominating the conversation, the 2026 Master Plan is a comprehensive vision for a mixed-use working waterfront. Beyond the space sector, the proposal outlines exciting community-focused developments. Harbour Pointe is slated to become a dynamic public-facing district complete with a regional Treasure Coast boat ramp, waterfront dining, a shared-use path, a living shoreline, and potentially a maritime workforce training campus. Across the water on South Hutchinson Island, Museum Pointe is envisioned as a premier mega-yacht marina, boasting floating docks, an event venue, a fishing pier, and a potential water taxi service connecting it directly to Harbour Pointe.

St. Lucie County officials are actively seeking community input to help shape the final details of this ambitious project following a recent public meeting at the Fort Pierce Yacht Club. Treasure Coast residents and local business owners are encouraged to review the draft master plan and share their feedback through the county’s official online survey. As Florida’s launch industry expands, this new era for the Port of Fort Pierce promises to bring high-tech industry, enhanced public recreational spaces, and robust economic growth to our local shores.
