A significant infrastructure upgrade is coming to Indian River County, aiming to protect local waterways and elevate neighborhood real estate values. Congressman Mike Haridopolos recently announced a $1 million federal grant designated to kickstart a vital sewage improvement initiative.

The overall $20.8 million project will focus on retrofitting the outdated and failing sewage system currently serving the Ixora Park community. This essential modernization targets a neighborhood encompassing over 230 homes. Because the community sits directly adjacent to the County South Relief Canal, the failing sewer system has posed a severe environmental threat to the highly diverse Indian River Lagoon.

The Ixora Park sewage retrofit will replace aging infrastructure to drastically reduce the underground discharge of harmful nitrogen and phosphorus into local estuaries, safeguarding one of Florida’s most important natural resources.

According to Keith Drewett of the Clean Water Coalition of Indian River County, the region’s high water table and heavy rainfall cause excess water to flow continuously through the subsurface. This hidden runoff has contributed to a noticeable decline in the lagoon’s water quality over the last two decades, severely impacting local recreation such as swimming and fishing.

By replacing these failing sewer systems, Indian River County residents can expect several vital community benefits:

  • Environmental Protection: Significantly decreased pollution entering the Indian River Lagoon ecosystem.
  • Public Health and Safety: Rehabilitated infrastructure that ensures a cleaner, safer daily environment for Ixora Park homeowners.
  • Enhanced Real Estate Appeal: Modernized utilities that, according to Haridopolos, will help improve the taxable value and overall marketability of local properties.
