An Indian River County Sheriff’s deputy and his canine partner narrowly escaped severe injury early Wednesday morning when a vehicle traveling at triple-digit speeds lost control and collided with their patrol unit. The harrowing incident, which took place along 43rd Avenue, highlights the severe risks law enforcement officers face on local Florida roadways.

According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, K-9 Deputy Williams and his partner, K-9 Remy, were conducting a routine patrol when a silver SUV approached them northbound at an estimated 100 miles per hour. The speeding driver failed to navigate a curve, causing the vehicle to lose control and aggressively sideswipe the rear driver’s side of the deputy’s patrol car. Following the initial collision, the SUV careened off the roadway and crashed violently into a nearby tree line.

Yeah, I was actually trying to avoid him, but he smacked me.

Deputy Williams described the terrifying moment of impact in body camera footage released by the department. The video captures the immediate aftermath of the crash, revealing tense but highly professional interactions as responding deputies rushed to secure the scene, check on their fellow officer, and assess the suspect for injuries.

In the footage, deputies can be heard rushing to the wrecked SUV, asking the driver if he was okay and if anyone else was trapped inside the vehicle. The driver, confirming he was alone and largely uninjured aside from a bumped knee, quickly acknowledged the gravity of his situation, telling deputies, “I’m getting in trouble.” Officers carefully assisted him from the wreckage and conducted a precautionary pat-down to ensure scene safety before detaining him.

The driver was officially identified by authorities as Oliver Gachelin. Following the crash investigation at the scene, Gachelin was taken into custody by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. He is currently facing charges for driving without a valid driver’s license.

Despite the violent nature of the high-speed collision, the outcome was incredibly fortunate for the local law enforcement unit. Deputy Williams sustained only minor injuries during the crash, and K-9 Remy emerged completely unharmed. Both the deputy and his K-9 partner have already been cleared and returned to active duty.

Local authorities emphasized that the situation was a massive close call; had the impact been head-on rather than a sideswipe, the results could have been catastrophic. The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office is using the incident to publicly urge drivers to slow down and remain alert, noting that the community’s roads are significantly safer when everyone does their part.
