Vero Beach, FL — A Fort Pierce man is facing a decade behind bars following a dangerous shooting incident and a subsequent high-speed chase through Indian River County. The recent sentencing brings a sense of closure to a tense case that began in early 2024 at a local Vero Beach apartment complex.

On January 28, 2024, deputies from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of active gunfire at the Orangewood Apartments. According to official reports, five bullets penetrated an apartment occupied by a local family.

A 25-year-old suspect was sentenced to 10 years in prison after firing multiple rounds into an occupied family dwelling at the Orangewood Apartments and leading local deputies on a dangerous high-speed pursuit.

Witnesses at the scene provided crucial details to investigators, reporting that individuals inside a red Mercedes were seen firing shots toward an intended target before speeding out of the residential complex. To track the suspects, law enforcement utilized the area’s Flock license-plate reading cameras. The digital footage successfully captured the red Mercedes lingering in the immediate vicinity for approximately two minutes before the vehicle stopped, the gunfire erupted, and the car fled the scene.

When a local deputy later spotted the described Mercedes and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver chose to flee. The pursuit quickly reached dangerous speeds as the suspect ran through red lights with blatant disregard for the safety of other Vero Beach motorists and pedestrians.

Authorities successfully located the vehicle the following day, leading to the arrest of 25-year-old Vandrell Jacobs on January 29, 2024. Jacobs admitted to the allegations at the time of his arrest and was officially booked by the sheriff’s office.

The formal charges brought against Jacobs included:

  • Shooting into a dwelling
  • Fleeing police with disregard for safety

During his court appearance this past Friday, Jacobs was handed a 10-year prison sentence. He immediately began serving his term, successfully removing a dangerous threat from the streets of the Treasure Coast.
