The Vero Beach High School Fighting Indians captured their fifth consecutive victory in a thrilling matchup at Billy Livings Field at the Citrus Bowl, defeating the visiting Pahokee High Blue Devils 22-7 on Friday, October 9, 2026. While the local defense turned in a dominant, shutout-caliber performance, it was a wildly improvised, broken-play fake punt that ultimately stole the show and solidified the win for the hometown favorites.

Late in the first quarter, facing a daunting fourth-and-18 from the Blue Devils’ 37-yard line, Vero Beach initially sent out punter Snyder Arbelaez. However, in a moment of apparent substitution confusion, quarterback Makai White stepped back into the formation at a punter’s distance. The ensuing snap led to an unbelievable sequence of backyard-style football.

“I was supposed to stay on. But when I saw him come on, I went off.” — Makai White

Upon receiving the snap, White scrambled to his right to avoid the defensive pressure. Meanwhile, receiver Marc “Chucho” Johns abandoned his original route—which was drawn up to go through the A gap—because the inside lane was closed off. Bouncing to the outside, Johns found himself with open space down the left sideline. White spotted him and fired a cross-field bullet near the 10-yard line.

Johns made the catch, immediately absorbed contact from three Pahokee defenders, and powered his way into the end zone for a 37-yard touchdown. Following Arbelaez’s successful PAT, Vero Beach took a commanding 14-0 lead.

Vero Beach head coach Lenny Jankowski noted that despite the delayed timing, the chaotic play mirrored the team’s underlying playbook design.

“Believe it or not, that’s where everybody is supposed to end up. It didn’t actually happen on time. But I was pleased we were able to keep our eyes up and Chucho was able to find an opening and obviously Makai made a great play.” — Coach Lenny Jankowski

Beyond the offensive fireworks of the fake punt, the Fighting Indians’ defense put on an absolute clinic for the Vero Beach crowd. They restricted the Blue Devils to a staggering 49 total yards for the entire game, allowing a mere 3 rushing yards and 46 passing yards. In the first half alone, Pahokee managed just one single first down. Because Pahokee’s only points came from a pick-6 interception return, the Vero Beach defense functionally pitched a shutout.

Key contributors to this defensive wall included:

  • Kaden Huggins, junior linebacker, who recorded two momentum-halting sacks.
  • Jaravis Drayton, Tristan Davis, Sergio Hogue, Jay-Ron Bostwick, Deyontae Miles, Deion Jackson, and Alan Carter, all of whom registered critical tackles for a loss.

Offensively, Vero Beach showed flashes of brilliance paired with moments of inconsistency against a tough, physical Pahokee squad. The team opened the game strong with a 45-yard drive, culminating in a 2-yard touchdown run from senior running back Jayden Lockhart operating out of the wildcat formation. Lockhart later punctuated a punishing 10-play, 87-yard drive in the second half with a 15-yard touchdown run, finishing the night with 61 rushing yards on 13 carries. A successful two-point conversion run by Marcus Melbourne pushed the lead to 22-0 before the late Pahokee interception return.

Quarterback Makai White finished the night completing 12 of 20 passes for 99 yards. Latravious Woods proved to be a reliable target, pulling in five receptions for 39 yards while adding 36 rushing yards. Johns contributed 45 rushing yards on 13 carries alongside his spectacular 40 receiving yards.

Despite the victory bumping their impressive record to 7-1, Coach Jankowski acknowledged that the team must strive for more consistent, complementary football as the season enters its final stretch. The Fighting Indians now enter a well-timed bye week to recover from a grueling stretch of physical games before hitting the road.

Local Indian River County sports fans should mark their calendars for October 23, when Vero Beach travels to South County Regional Park in Port St. Lucie to face the Treasure Coast Titans. This highly anticipated matchup will officially decide the Class 6A-District 8 champion. The regular season will then conclude on October 30 on the road against Eau Gallie.
