The South Fork Bulldogs have successfully navigated the recent wave of Treasure Coast rain showers to claim a major victory at the Vero Beach High School Invitational. Hosted at the scenic Sandridge Golf Club in Vero Beach, Florida, the tournament provided the region’s top-ranked boys golf team a much-needed opportunity to showcase their skills over a complete 18-hole stretch.

The South Fork High School boys golf team secured the Vero Beach Invitational title with a team gross score of 283, narrowly edging out Lakewood Ranch by a single stroke in a highly competitive best-ball format.

Playing under a best-ball structure, South Fork delivered a remarkably consistent performance. Their final score of 283 placed them just one stroke ahead of the runner-up, Lakewood Ranch of Bradenton, and four strokes clear of third-place Spruce Creek.

The Bulldogs’ impressive run was spearheaded by junior standout Tyler Lilienfeld. Navigating the Vero Beach course, Lilienfeld finished in a six-way tie for seventh place after carding an even-par 72. His performance showcased serious resilience; after shooting a 38 on the front nine and starting the back nine with consecutive bogeys, he rebounded with four birdies across his final seven holes. This late-stage rally included three consecutive birdies on holes 15 through 17.

Fellow South Fork junior Gatlin Albright closely followed, posting a 1-over-par 73 to land in a seven-way tie for 13th place. Vero Beach High School’s own junior golfer, Jaxon Hudson, also finished strong to join Albright in the competitive tie for 13th. Overall tournament medalist honors went to Patrick Pinkney of Archbishop McCarthy, who finished four strokes ahead of Lilienfeld.

South Fork head coach A.J. Fabrizio praised the local tournament’s unique format and its positive impact on the team’s dynamic.

  • Team Development: Fabrizio highlighted the Vero Beach Invitational as his favorite tournament of the year, noting it is the only event where the team can play an entire round together on every hole, fostering vital team bonding.
  • Roster Experience: The South Fork roster boasts three seniors, two juniors, and one freshman. Fabrizio emphasized that their extensive experience in high-level golf ensures the players remain completely unfazed during high-pressure tournament situations.

The victory in Vero Beach comes at a critical juncture in the season for South Fork. Due to severe weather cancellations across the Treasure Coast, the team has only been able to complete half of its scheduled matches. With just two weeks remaining before the district tournament, the Bulldogs are laser-focused on securing their seventh consecutive berth in the FHSAA State Championships.

Despite the abbreviated regular-season schedule, South Fork remains a dominant force in Florida high school golf. The team is currently ranked first in District 14-2A, second in Region 4-2A, third in Class 2A, and 14th overall in the state. Individually, Albright continues to shine as the team’s highest-ranked golfer, sitting at 19th in the state with an iWanamaker score of -1.376, while Lilienfeld ranks comfortably inside the top 100 at 97th overall.
