The spirit of Vero Beach shines brightly on a national stage as three talented juniors from Vero Beach High School were recently selected to perform in the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. This incredible opportunity marks a significant achievement for these young musicians and brings immense pride to our local community in Indian River County.

Trumpet players Juan Celin and Cole Lancaster, alongside flute player Annabelle Robins, earned their spots in the prestigious “Great American Marching Band.” This elite ensemble comprises 245 of the nation’s finest high school musicians, color guard members, and dancers, all chosen through a rigorous audition process from band programs across the United States. Their selection underscores the dedication, talent, and hard work cultivated within Vero Beach High School’s esteemed music department.

“This was a dream of mine since eighth grade,” Robins shared, expressing the long-held aspiration that has now come to fruition. Her sentiment echoes the passion and commitment that drives these students to excel in their musical pursuits.

The journey to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade began last spring when the trio submitted their audition materials. Months of anticipation culminated in the exciting notification of their acceptance, setting the stage for a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. For these students, it’s not just about playing music; it’s about representing their school, their heritage, and their hometown.

Juan Celin highlighted this sense of identity, stating, “I’m proud to represent Vero Beach High School and my Colombian heritage.” Similarly, Cole Lancaster voiced his enthusiasm, remarking, “I’m proud to represent the Vero Beach High School Band on the biggest stage.” Their words encapsulate the honor they feel in showcasing the excellence of Vero Beach on such a prominent national platform.

The Great American Marching Band has been a cherished component of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade since 2006, offering thousands of young musicians the chance to perform before millions of spectators. The parade itself, now in its 99th edition, is a spectacle of grand proportions, featuring:

  • 28 elaborate floats
  • 28 diverse performers
  • 11 dynamic marching bands

For residents of Vero Beach and beyond, witnessing these local talents participate in such a beloved American tradition is a source of profound joy and community spirit. It serves as a testament to the high caliber of educational and artistic opportunities available right here in Indian River County. The dedication shown by Juan, Annabelle, and Cole inspires aspiring musicians throughout our local schools, demonstrating that with talent and perseverance, dreams can indeed come true, even on the largest stages.
