Tragedy has deeply touched the heart of our community, as family and friends prepare to say their final goodbyes to David Long, the 76-year-old locksmith who tragically lost his life while assisting Indian River County deputies. Long, known for his tremendous spirit and big heart, passed away from injuries sustained during a shooting on November 21st, an incident that also claimed the life of Indian River County Sgt. Terri Sweeting-Mashkow. The solemn occasion of Long’s celebration of life will bring the community together to honor a man remembered for his unwavering kindness and willingness to help others.

The community is invited to pay their respects at Calvary Chapel, located at 94118th Street in Vero Beach, on Thursday, December 4th. Visitation is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. This service provides a crucial opportunity for residents of Vero Beach and the wider Indian River County area to unite in mourning and support for those impacted by this profound loss.

“David Long was more than just a locksmith; he was an Army veteran and a cherished member of our community who consistently extended a helping hand to those around him. His memory will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of many.”

Long’s obituary paints a picture of a dedicated individual. An Army veteran, he made Fort Pierce his home during his formative years and later attended Dan McCarty High School. His life was characterized by acts of service, a trait that resonated deeply with those who knew him. In a testament to his compassionate nature, the family has respectfully requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to your local Humane Society, reflecting his care for all creatures.

The tragic events of November 21st saw Long hospitalized after a resident opened fire while deputies were serving an eviction notice. He succumbed to his injuries two days later, following the death of Sgt. Sweeting-Mashkow. The 37-year-old gunman also died a day after the shooting, bringing a somber end to a harrowing incident that sent shockwaves throughout Indian River County.

Our thoughts also remain with the family and colleagues of Sgt. Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, whose memorial service is set for December 2nd. This service will be held at the Corporate Air Hangar, situated at 2614 Airport N. Drive, also in Vero Beach. The simultaneous loss of these two individuals has left an indelible mark on the community, highlighting the risks faced by those who serve and protect, and those who assist them. The gathering for both services in Vero Beach underscores the deep impact felt locally, reinforcing the tight-knit spirit of Indian River County residents as they navigate this challenging time.
