A tragic update has emerged regarding a devastating weekend collision on Florida’s Turnpike. Authorities have confirmed that a young child involved in a severe multi-vehicle accident in Indian River County has passed away from his injuries.
A 3-year-old boy from Fort Pierce, critically injured in a wrong-way crash on Florida’s Turnpike that immediately claimed the life of the 26-year-old driver, died Thursday morning at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
The fatal incident occurred late Saturday night when a white 2025 Kia K4 sedan, driven by a 26-year-old woman from Fort Pierce, was traveling in the wrong direction. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the vehicle was heading south in the inside northbound lane of the turnpike. This dangerous trajectory resulted in a violent head-on collision with a northbound black 2023 Kia Pacifica.
Emergency responders pronounced the 26-year-old Fort Pierce woman dead at the scene. Two young children were also passengers in her vehicle. While the 3-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and tragically succumbed to his injuries days later, a 5-year-old child in the same vehicle thankfully survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
The catastrophic impact on the Treasure Coast roadway ultimately involved three separate vehicles and multiple passengers. The occupants of the other vehicles involved in the crash experienced varying degrees of injury:
- The Second Vehicle: The driver of the black Pacifica, a 22-year-old man from Margate, alongside three female passengers from Royal Palm Beach ages 24, 50, and 74, all suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency personnel transported them to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital for medical care.
- The Third Vehicle: A 48-year-old male driver and a 23-year-old male passenger, both from Mount Dora, escaped the secondary collision without injury. A 46-year-old female passenger in their vehicle sustained minor injuries.
This heartbreaking event serves as a somber reminder to the Treasure Coast community regarding the severe dangers of wrong-way driving on major Florida highways. Local law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the underlying circumstances that led the vehicle to travel in the opposite direction on the turnpike.
