The political landscape for Indian River County residents is officially shifting ahead of the November 3, 2026, election. Following recent congressional map adjustments by the Florida Legislature, Indian River County has been transitioned into U.S. House of Representatives District 9. This newly drawn battleground will see incumbent Democrat Darren Soto face off against Republican challenger and Vero Beach resident Dan Green.

Historically part of District 8, which extended from Brevard County down the Treasure Coast to Vero Beach, Indian River County is now part of one of the largest congressional districts in the state by area. The newly defined District 9 stretches from Orlando, swoops southwest to Yeehaw Junction, includes the cities of Kissimmee and St. Cloud, and encompasses the entirety of Indian River County.

This redistricting introduces a fresh electoral dynamic for Vero Beach voters, blending the priorities of Central Florida’s urban hubs with the distinct coastal, agricultural, and economic interests of the Treasure Coast.

Meet the Incumbent: U.S. Rep. Darren Soto

Darren Soto, a Kissimmee resident and former commercial attorney, has represented the region in Congress since 2017, following a long tenure in the Florida House and Senate. Running unopposed in the August Democratic primary, Soto is campaigning on a platform centered around what he calls the “3 C’s”: lowering costs, protecting healthcare care, and stopping corruption.

According to his campaign platform, Soto emphasizes the need to end federal policies and tariffs that elevate the costs of gas, groceries, and agricultural fertilizers. Furthermore, he points to a legislative record of securing federal investments for his district. His key local and regional accomplishments include:

  • Delivering $9.4 million in federal funding to help restore the ecologically vital Indian River Lagoon.
  • Securing billions in infrastructure funding for projects like Interstate 4 and the Orlando International Airport.
  • Co-authoring the Restoring Resilient Reefs Act, marking a major legislative milestone for environmental conservation in Florida.

Meet the Challenger: Dan Green

Challenging the incumbent is Vero Beach’s own Dan Green, who emerged victorious from a crowded field of seven Republicans in the primary. Green brings an extensive military and defense background to the race. Currently serving as a Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve with multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, he also served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Force Development during the Trump Administration.
