Vero Beach tennis fans recently witnessed what might be the greatest underdog story in the history of the ITF World Tennis Tour. Held at the sold-out Sea Oaks Beach & Tennis Club, the Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation $15,000 ITF Futures tournament concluded with an astonishing victory by a completely unranked player.
In a historic Mother’s Day miracle on the local clay courts, unranked 24-year-old Brazilian Joaquim de Almeida, who entered the qualifying draw as the 28th alternate, defied the odds to defeat top-seeded Alex Rybakov and claim the Mike Rahaley Memorial Trophy.
Almeida’s journey to the championship was nothing short of extraordinary. Living in Orlando as a teaching professional, he entered the Vero Beach tournament with a zero ATP ranking due to a year of inactivity. Before even reaching his first professional final, the left-handed player had to save eight match points across his preliminary victories, surviving extreme heat, high humidity, and multiple grueling three-hour matches. His path to the finals included outlasting seventh-seeded Strong Kirchheimer and former world No. 39 J.J. Wolf.
The final showdown against top-seed Alex Rybakov, a seasoned 29-year-old professional with five Futures titles to his name, heavily tested Almeida’s endurance. After playing a nearly flawless first set, Almeida stumbled in the second. However, timely motivation from a local Vero Beach tennis fan in the crowd helped him refocus his energy and lean into his deep spiritual faith. He ultimately secured the victory on his first match point with a score of 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Rybakov praised Almeida’s resilience, noting his incredible shot-making during critical moments in the decisive third set.
Key Highlights from the Vero Beach Tournament:
- Almeida is only the second player with a zero ATP ranking to win this 30-year local event, following Ryan Sweeting in 2005.
- The champion was heavily supported by the local community, with housing provided by a Sea Oaks member arranged through the leadership of the Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation.
- By winning the title, Almeida earned 15 highly coveted ATP ranking points to officially jump-start his professional career.
In addition to the thrilling singles final, the Sea Oaks clay courts also hosted an intense doubles championship. The top-seeded duo of Hunter Heck and Oliver Okonkwo secured their fourth consecutive straight-set victory of the week to claim the title. They defeated the towering team of Boca Raton’s Preston Brown and Chile’s Diego Jarry Fillol with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory. This marked the second consecutive doubles title for the Okonkwo and Heck tandem.
The vibrant energy and sold-out crowds at the Sea Oaks Beach & Tennis Club this past week continue to cement Vero Beach’s strong reputation as a premier destination for world-class, competitive tennis on the Treasure Coast.
