The local community gathered under the stadium lights to celebrate the end of spring practice, as the Vero Beach High School football team hosted a high-energy intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday, May 21. Held at the iconic Billy Livings Field at the Citrus Bowl, the free community event featured all the excitement of a traditional fall game, complete with performances by the Pride of the Treasure Coast band, cheerleading routines, and local food trucks lining the endzone.
Rather than traveling to face an external opponent to cap off their 20 days of spring drills, Vero Beach opted to keep the action in-house. The structured scrimmage offered local fans an exciting first look at the defending Class 7A runner-up squad.
At the center of the community’s attention was starting quarterback Wonderful Champ Monds. Recently committed to the University of Notre Dame over programs like Florida State and Ohio State, Monds reclassified to the Class of 2027. This shift makes the upcoming fall his final season representing Vero Beach. Wearing a protective green jersey, Monds looked fully healthy after missing parts of last year’s regular season and playoff run, showing excellent zip on his passes.
Tonight was just a collective effort of what’s happened throughout the spring. I was pleased with how the spring went. Each and every day we made progress. That’s what it’s all about.
The scrimmage provided several promising takeaways for the upcoming Treasure Coast football season:
- Offensive Efficiency: Monds delivered an incredibly precise performance in the controlled environment, completing 18 of 20 passes for 369 yards. His top targets included rising senior Marcus Melbourne, who hauled in six catches for 147 yards and multiple touchdowns. Rising juniors Bryce Dolce and Latravious Woods also posted strong receiving yards.
- Defensive Dominance: The defensive unit relentlessly pressured the pocket. Rising senior defensive lineman Tristan Davis led the charge with three-and-a-half sacks and a tackle for loss. The defense also saw sacks from Eric Moore, Alan Carter, and Alex Guxman, while rising junior cornerback Andrew Lloyd secured an interception.
- Roster Adjustments: Following the graduation of eight offensive linemen, the coaching staff used the evening to test various blocking combinations. Head Coach Lenny Jankowski acknowledged that the offensive line will be a steady work in progress as they prepare for the fall.
- Special Teams: The kicking game remains reliable, with rising junior Jackson Barsalou and rising senior Snyder Arbelaez easily converting their extra-point attempts and delivering strong punts.
With the spring session officially wrapped, the Vero Beach roster will take a brief pause before diving into summer strength, conditioning, and 7-on-7 workouts starting June 1. Local sports fans can look forward to the team’s return to the Citrus Bowl on August 14, when Vero Beach will host the Class 1A state champion, West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman, for their highly anticipated fall classic.
