Vero Beach High School is once again in the national collegiate football spotlight. As the upcoming high school football season approaches, all eyes on the Treasure Coast are fixed on Vero Beach’s dynamic signal-caller, Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV. The talented local quarterback has become one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the nation, drawing heavy interest from powerhouse athletic programs across the country.

Vero Beach High School quarterback Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV has emerged as a top-tier national recruit for the 2027 class, with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish positioning themselves as a dark horse contender in a fierce recruiting battle against frontrunners like Florida State and Ohio State.

Standing an impressive 6-foot-2 and weighing 225 pounds, Monds has captured the attention of top-tier college scouts. Recently, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have intensified their efforts to bring the Indian River County standout to South Bend. Following the commitments of other quarterback prospects to competing schools, Notre Dame has zoned in on the Vero Beach star. Monds is scheduled to make a highly anticipated visit to Notre Dame during the weekend of April 18th.

Recruiting experts suggest that while Florida State and Ohio State are currently leading the battle for the Vero Beach High standout, Notre Dame remains a very real threat. According to Steve Wiltfong from Rivals/On3, Notre Dame embodies many of the qualities that Monds and his family are seeking at the collegiate level. Monds holds the distinction of being the first quarterback offered by Notre Dame after their previous commit reclassified.

Monds’ journey to national prominence is a testament to his raw talent and on-field efficiency. Originally slated as the top-ranked quarterback in the 2028 recruiting class, he recently made the decision to reclassify to the 2027 class. Despite moving up a year, he is currently rated as a four-star prospect on the 247 Sports Composite rankings. He sits comfortably as the No. 210 overall player nationally, the No. 19 quarterback, and the No. 23 overall player in the state of Florida.

During the 2025 season, Monds made the most of his opportunities on the field. Serving primarily as the backup to Florida State signee Efrem White, Monds played in five games and delivered staggering efficiency. He completed 45 of his 63 passing attempts, boasting a 71 percent completion rate. He threw for 691 yards and seven touchdowns without a single interception, while also adding a rushing touchdown to his resume.

The list of major collegiate programs vying for the Vero Beach quarterback reads like a roster of college football’s elite. His current prominent scholarship offers include:

  • Notre Dame
