Orchid Island Brewery has officially ushered in a new era for craft beer in Vero Beach, unveiling its highly anticipated new location at the historic Hogan Yards. Following the closure of their original Oceanside Business District taproom in 2020, owners Alden and Valerie Bing have returned with an expanded, ambitious vision. Operating out of a beautifully restored tomato and citrus packinghouse, the venue is a carefully engineered facility designed to elevate the Treasure Coast beer scene through historic brewing techniques and a deep commitment to the region’s agricultural roots.
The Bings have passionately revived their signature “Grove to Glass” initiative, an approach that intertwines Indian River citrus directly into the brewing process. Going beyond standard ingredient sourcing, the owners are actively cultivating produce right on the brewery’s property, including finger limes, mangoes, and vanilla beans.
The commitment to local agriculture is immediately evident in their tap offerings, utilizing ingredients like locally sourced lemons from Lambeth Groves and honeybells picked and zested on the exact same morning to take the concept of fresh to its absolute pinnacle.
To craft beverages destined to attract beer tourists and delight Vero Beach locals alike, Orchid Island Brewery utilizes specialized equipment and historic methodologies rarely seen in Florida’s modern craft brewing industry:
- Czech-Inspired Pouring Traditions: Heavily influenced by heritage brewers like the 180-year-old Pilsner Urquell in the Czech Republic, the Bings place a major emphasis on lagers and the pursuit of the “perfect pour,” framing the drinking experience as a rich social tradition.
- Direct-Delivery Pub Tanks: Out of the taproom’s fifteen taps, three are connected directly to pub tanks suspended from the ceiling. Visually striking from the bar, this uncommon setup completely bypasses traditional kegs, prioritizing unmatched freshness and a direct path from tank to glass.
- Decoction Mashing: This complex brewing technique involves separating batches of crushed grain, heating them individually, and recombining them. While the mashing process requires significantly more time, the resulting quality and flavor upgrade is vast, which Alden Bing compares to the difference between standard domestic stock and premium Wagyu beef.
- Extensive Use of Oak Foeders: While the facility features standard stainless steel fermenters, its crown jewels are its traditional oak foeders. The brewery boasts five American-made foeders and one French-made vessel. According to Dan Saettle of Foeder Crafters of America, Orchid Island is believed to hold the largest collection of American-made foeders of any Florida brewery. These specialized oak vessels are prized for naturally softening the finished product, rounding out the flavor profile, and removing the harshness often found in conventionally fermented beers.
By seamlessly blending Vero Beach’s rich Indian River agricultural heritage with old-world European brewing traditions, Orchid Island Brewery has created an unparalleled local tasting experience. Their new Hogan Yards destination stands as a testament to the thriving, innovative business community on the Treasure Coast, offering an authentic and high-quality hub for craft beer aficionados.
