Indian River County residents have a prime opportunity to help shape the future of our local coastline. A public workshop dedicated to the county’s Beach Preservation Plan is scheduled for this Tuesday, offering the community a chance to learn about coastal risk analyses, rising sea levels, and ongoing efforts to protect our beautiful local beaches.

The vital community workshop will take place on Tuesday, April 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Indian River Shores Community Center, located at 6001 Highway A1A.

Public input is a vital part of the planning process. Attendees will have multiple opportunities to share comments during and after the workshop, including an online comment form and other submission options.

The evening will kick off with a brief Beach and Shores Advisory Committee meeting, followed by a detailed presentation outlining Indian River County’s comprehensive beach preservation initiatives. The Beach Preservation Plan serves as a crucial, long-term strategy that guides the monitoring, restoration, and management of the county’s 22.4 miles of stunning Atlantic coastline.

Following the formal presentation, attendees are encouraged to explore an open house-style workshop featuring informative posters and exhibits. Local county staff and technical experts will be on hand to answer questions and discuss key local issues, including:

  • Current shoreline changes and coastal erosion
  • Storm resilience and storm impact mitigation
  • Environmental protection and ecosystem health
  • Future coastal management strategies

Originally established in 1988, the Beach Preservation Plan is periodically updated to reflect the latest advancements in coastal science, recent storm impacts, and evolving environmental conditions. Local leaders emphasize that active community participation is strictly necessary to ensure the plan carefully balances environmental stewardship, public beach access, and coastal protection while reflecting the distinct priorities of Indian River County residents.

Locals seeking more information about the upcoming workshop or the Beach Preservation Plan can visit the official Indian River County website. For direct inquiries or to request ADA accommodations, the community is encouraged to contact the county’s Coastal Division directly.
