The crisp autumn air in Vero Beach brings more than just a change in season; it heralds the return of one of Indian River County’s most heartwarming community traditions. On November 5, the Catholic Charities’ Samaritan Center will host its 34th annual Soup Bowl, a beloved local event dedicated to raising critical funds for homeless families in our community.
Running from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the historic Vero Beach Heritage Center, located at 2140 14th Ave, this day of giving offers residents a chance to enjoy a simple meal with a profound impact. For those unable to make it to the downtown venue, soup and beautifully crafted bowls will also be available at more than 20 participating businesses, places of worship, and community groups throughout the local area.
Attendees can look forward to the following offerings to support the cause:
- Soup by the Bowl: Available for just $5, offering a warm, comforting meal to enjoy on the spot.
- Soup by the Quart: Perfect for taking home to the family, priced at $15.
- Handcrafted Pottery Bowls: Unique, one-of-a-kind bowls crafted by local artisans at Indian River Clay are available for an additional $20.
This year, organizers anticipate distributing over 1,000 bowls. However, the true significance of the event lies far beyond the artisan pottery and warm meals. The Samaritan Center serves as a vital transitional residence for homeless families with children, welcoming individuals of all faiths. With the current shortage of affordable housing in Florida, the center is witnessing an increasing number of working families facing sudden crises caused by job loss, medical diagnoses, mental health challenges, or domestic abuse.
With the simple act of buying a bowl of soup or pottery, anyone can join us in helping families go from homelessness to living independently. You’ll help some of the neediest in our community, and in return, receive artfully crafted bowls that serve as gifts, keepsakes and powerful reminders of your kindness.
Proceeds from the event go far beyond providing a safe bed. The Samaritan Center provides comprehensive case management, professional counseling, trauma support, life skills classes, and educational programs specifically designed to help families regain their financial and personal independence. Since its inception, this incredible Catholic Charities program has transformed the lives of 750 families and more than 1,250 children in the immediate area. The center also operates as a funded partner of the United Way and the Indian River County Children’s Services Advisory Council.
The Soup Bowl thrives on the collaborative spirit of Vero Beach. Indian River Clay continues its generous tradition of supplying the ceramic bowls, an effort that brings together Treasure Coast potters and dedicated volunteers. Meanwhile, the Vero Beach Heritage Center proudly serves as the central host site for the second consecutive year, a partnership that perfectly aligns with the historic venue’s mission to preserve and strengthen the local community.
The fundraiser has deep roots in Indian River County, originally launched by the center’s first advisory board led by Betty Egan and Shotsi Lajoie. Recognizing that many homeless individuals survived on just a single bowl of soup a day, they built this enduring community event around that powerful image. Today, supported continuously from the very beginning by the Bernard A. Egan Foundation, the 34th annual Soup Bowl stands as a testament to the unwavering generosity and compassion of Vero Beach residents.
