Local students in Indian River County are stepping into the upcoming summer season with confidence, thanks to a heartwarming philanthropic partnership. The Vero Beach-based nonprofit organization Youth Guidance recently received a generous grant from Shoes From Susan, enabling the purchase of 108 pairs of brand-new shoes for 95 deserving local students.
On April 16 and April 23, the participating students took a special trip to Rack Room Shoes located at the Vero Beach Outlets. Rather than simply handing out pre-selected items, the initiative provided each student with the unique opportunity to browse the store and choose a pair of shoes that perfectly fit their individual needs and personal style. This hands-on experience offered much more than essential footwear; it gifted the youth with a sense of dignity, excitement, and the pride of selecting something truly their own.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of Shoes From Susan, our students are stepping into summer feeling confident, prepared, and cared for. This partnership continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the young people we serve, and we are deeply grateful for their ongoing support.
The statement above, shared by Phil Barnes, the Executive Director of Youth Guidance, highlights the profound impact of the three-year partnership between the two organizations. By allowing children to make their own selections, the initiative directly reinforces the core values of inclusion and independence.
Both organizations involved share a deep commitment to uplifting the local Treasure Coast community:
- Youth Guidance: Dedicated to enriching the lives of youth across Indian River County, this organization focuses on building trust, self-esteem, and clear pathways to academic and career success. They aim to break the cycle of poverty for children and young adults (ages 6 to 24) through essential initiatives like the Pathways Afterschool Program, Summer Enrichment Program, Exchange Parent Aide program, Pre-Apprenticeship program, and dedicated one-on-one mentoring.
- Shoes From Susan: Operating as a field-of-interest fund under The Community Foundation Martin-St. Lucie, this initiative focuses on restoring opportunity for children living in poverty. Their mission is built on the belief that every child deserves to feel empowered through choice, providing properly fitted shoes in a retail setting to promote both physical well-being and self-esteem for underserved, school-aged youth.
Through their continued collaboration, Youth Guidance and Shoes From Susan are ensuring that local students have the vital resources they need to thrive and succeed in Vero Beach and beyond, one step at a time.
