The Vero Beach girls lacrosse team has once again proven that championship pedigree runs deep in Indian River County. In a stunning display of postseason resilience, the team secured its 23rd consecutive district championship by defeating top-seeded Viera 15-5 in the District 13-2A Final on Thursday, April 16, at Viera High School.
The Vero Beach girls lacrosse program captured its 23rd straight district title, overcoming a challenging regular season and a major coaching transition to dominate the district tournament and secure a regional home game.
Heading into the district tournament, there were uncharacteristic whispers of doubt surrounding the historic local program. After legendary head coach Shannon Dean retired at the end of the 2025 season, the team was handed over to first-year head coach Gabriella McKay. Navigating a brutal regular-season schedule ranked as the fourth-hardest in the state by the Florida High School Athletic Association, Vero Beach stumbled to a 5-11 record, including a difficult five-match losing streak spanning late February into March. The only teams with tougher schedules were the state’s top three ranked powerhouses: Episcopal School of Jacksonville, American Heritage, and Lake Highland Prep.
However, those regular-season trials were merely preparation for a dominant postseason run. Vero Beach exploded out of the gates in the district final, pouring in the first five goals of the opening quarter and never looking back. The team’s victory relegated Viera to runner-up status for the sixth consecutive year, despite Viera entering the district tournament as the top seed and ranked third in Region 4-2A.
Coach McKay, who graduated from Vero Beach in 2014, is no stranger to the program’s lofty expectations. During her time as a player under Dean, she helped secure three state championships before taking her talents to the collegiate level at Jacksonville University. Taking the reins from Dean—who built the program into a statewide powerhouse over 23 years with a staggering 429-68-1 record and an 86 percent win rate—McKay emphasized that the regular-season losses were highly constructive. She noted that her players calmly absorbed lessons from their elite opponents, utilizing those experiences to peak at the perfect time.
The team’s impressive district tournament performance included:
- Outscoring their three district opponents by a combined total of 46-14.
- Achieving their longest winning streak of the year at three games.
- Securing an automatic bid into the regional tournament.
- Earning the right to host a regional quarterfinal matchup on Saturday, April 25.
McKay credited the welcoming Vero Beach community, her dedicated coaching staff, and former coach Shannon Dean’s ongoing mentorship for helping her navigate her rookie season at the helm. She praised her squad’s calm demeanor and collective effort in the championship game, noting that the players constantly push to become the best versions of themselves every single day on the field.
In other local high school lacrosse action, Vero Beach’s St. Edward’s Pirates narrowly missed securing back-to-back District 13-1A titles, falling 8-7 to Benjamin after the Buccaneers scored twice in the final minute of play. Over in District 14-2A, Martin County dropped their contest 11-6 to top-seeded Jupiter. As the regional tournament approaches, local sports fans across the Treasure Coast will be eagerly watching the Vero Beach girls lacrosse team as they look to extend their legendary postseason streak.
