A Vero Beach physician has been sentenced to time behind bars following a comprehensive investigation into inappropriate workplace behavior. Dr. Christopher Olenek, 63, who practiced at East Side Urgent Care in Vero Beach, was convicted of battery and has been officially sentenced to one year in the Indian River County Jail.

This sentencing brings a resolution to a disturbing pattern of allegations that local law enforcement has been documenting for more than a decade. Olenek was initially taken into custody in November 2025 on a simple battery charge. The arrest was triggered when a job applicant reported being subjected to inappropriate touching by the doctor during the hiring process.

While the November 2025 arrest was the direct catalyst for his conviction, the complaints against the local medical professional were far-reaching. According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, there have been nine separate investigations into allegations of inappropriate behavior and touching involving patients and staff members, with reports dating as far back as 2011.

A 63-year-old Vero Beach physician has been sentenced to one year in the Indian River County Jail for battery, following an arrest spurred by a job applicant’s complaint and a history of nine investigations into inappropriate workplace behavior dating back to 2011.

Prosecuting the older cases proved to be a complex hurdle for local authorities. The sheriff’s office noted that many of the prior incidents could not be directly prosecuted due to the expiration of the statute of limitations or a lack of sufficient evidence. To build a robust case, local prosecutors relied on a specific Florida legal statute known as the Williams Rule.

Key Facts Regarding the Prosecution Strategy:

  • The Williams Rule allows prosecutors to introduce evidence of prior, similar bad acts to establish a clear pattern of behavior.
  • By utilizing this rule, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and prosecutors were able to present the historical allegations to the court, even though those specific earlier cases were beyond the statute of limitations.
  • This legal strategy was crucial in demonstrating that the 2025 incident was not an isolated event, but part of a long-standing history of misconduct at the urgent care facility.

For Vero Beach and Treasure Coast residents, the conclusion of this case underscores the ongoing commitment of Indian River County law enforcement to rigorously investigate grievances and ensure the safety and trust of the local medical community.
