Following a prestigious win for Best Feature Film at the Omaha Film Festival, a gripping psychological thriller produced by Vero Beach residents Barry and Carmen Nordstrand is set to captivate local audiences at the Vero Beach Film Festival.
The film, titled Bonding, will be showcased with special screenings scheduled for Friday and Saturday. For the Nordstrands, who spent their careers in Minneapolis before purchasing an oceanfront home in Vero Beach in November 2020, bringing their labor of love to their home community is a highly anticipated milestone.
“Vero Beach was the first acceptance we got and it means so much to us. Hopefully, we’ll go on to make them proud,” Barry Nordstrand stated, expressing deep appreciation for the caring and dedicated organizers behind the local festival.
A Unique Origin Story
The journey to producing Bonding began far from the Florida coast. Barry Nordstrand, founder and CEO of Stoner Ranch Productions, previously led a check-processing firm that evolved into a revolutionary healthcare payments company eventually acquired by United Health Group. Several years ago, the couple purchased a historic Colorado property—Stoner Ranch, a former ski resort where legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy allegedly once swapped horses. While exploring the lodge, Nordstrand’s son, actor David Nordstrand, noted the property’s inherently creepy atmosphere would make a perfect movie set.
Despite having no prior experience in the film industry, the Nordstrands dove headfirst into the two-year production process. Barry began by soliciting pitches on writer websites, seeking a thrilling narrative with a major second-act twist and an inescapable, Hotel California-style atmosphere.
Assembling the Cast and Crew
The production quickly expanded in scope, ultimately reaching a $3.5 million budget to accommodate high-quality cinematography and a seasoned cast. The Nordstrands hired Ukrainian director Victoria Trofimenko, whose demo reels Barry described as absolutely breathtaking, and selected a tense storyline crafted by writer Michael Colucci. The impressive ensemble cast features:
- David Nordstrand, stepping into one of the central lead roles.
- Jefferson White, widely recognized for his work in the hit series Yellowstone.
- Gloria Reuben, known for her acclaimed tenure on E.R.
- Tate Donovan, from the Academy Award-winning film Argo.
- Alexandra Doke, featured in the drama City on Fire.
The Challenges of Filmmaking
Creating Bonding was a complex learning experience. After viewing the initial cut, industry experts advised that the narrative needed further development, prompting extensive reshoots last summer. By the end of the process, 70 percent of the film had been altered. Nordstrand noted that while the final cut ran five minutes longer, the improved pacing made it feel 20 minutes shorter.
The resulting thriller follows three estranged siblings who find themselves at the remote ranch. Driven by a mix of chance and hidden agendas, the situation quickly goes sideways, testing the limits of their familial bonds. The film masterfully blends psychological suspense with the deeply relatable question of how far one will go for family.
Looking Ahead to the Next Scene
The Nordstrands are already preparing for their next cinematic venture. Barry is stepping into an executive director role for an upcoming nuanced art-house film, focusing primarily on financing while leaving time to enjoy the local golf courses. David Nordstrand is also set to return to the screen, taking on a supporting role alongside notable industry veterans after receiving highly positive reviews for his debut performance.
For now, the spotlight remains firmly on the Vero Beach Film Festival, where the Nordstrands hope the local community will come out to experience the thriller that has already earned tremendous acclaim across the festival circuit.
