The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 4A State Track and Field Championships brought fierce competition to Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, and athletes from Vero Beach and the surrounding coastal region delivered standout, medal-winning performances. The local high school track stars proved their dominance on the state level, bringing home multiple gold medals and securing impressive overall team finishes.
Vero Beach High School made a powerful statement at the state meet, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams securing top-ten placements. The Vero Beach girls’ team tied for seventh place overall with 23 points, while the boys’ team claimed ninth place with 21 points.
Local athletes who captured state titles and top-tier finishes include:
- Andrew Youssef (Vero Beach): Captured the state championship title in the boys’ 3200-meter run with a phenomenal first-place time of 9:01.99.
- Taylor-Nicole Overton (Vero Beach): Claimed gold in the girls’ 400-meter dash, blazing across the finish line in 52.84 seconds.
- Isaiah Cummings (Vero Beach): Earned a fifth-place finish in the boys’ triple jump, reaching a distance of 14.11 meters.
In addition to Vero Beach’s stellar achievements, athletes from neighboring Space Coast and Treasure Coast schools also brought home significant state hardware. Viera sophomore Michal Paul earned a bronze medal in the boys’ long jump with a mark of 7.22 meters and took sixth place in the 400-meter dash. Viera senior Michael Girard secured fifth place in the 3200-meter run with a time of 9:11.32.
Melbourne junior Jeremiah Thomas tied for fourth place in the high jump, clearing 1.92 meters, while Palm Bay Heritage senior Nathaniel Owens capped his high school track career by placing sixth in the long jump with a 7.05-meter leap. Bayside junior Devin Kennedy also competed strongly, placing 17th in the girls’ 400-meter dash.
The FHSAA Class 4A state championships highlighted the elite athletic talent across Vero Beach and the wider coastal region, with Vero Beach High School celebrating two individual state championships in the boys’ 3200-meter distance run and the girls’ 400-meter sprint.
These incredible achievements underscore the dedication of local student-athletes and coaching staffs who continue to elevate the profile of Vero Beach and Indian River County sports on the statewide stage. From dominating the endurance runs to sprinting to victory, the local community was undeniably well-represented in Jacksonville.
