In a gripping matchup at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers on Friday, May 15, the local squad stood toe-to-toe with one of the top-ranked teams in the country before ultimately falling 4-2 to Venice.
Entering the contest as the underdog, Vero Beach showcased the resilience that defined their stellar year. A Heroic Pitching Effort
Senior pitcher Cody Morgan was spectacular on the mound for Vero Beach. Morgan kept a formidable Venice lineup at bay through the first five innings, allowing minimal damage and giving his team a legitimate chance to advance. However, the grueling battle eventually took its toll. After securing the first out in the bottom of the sixth, Morgan gave up a double to Beau Daniel. Showing his trademark grit, Morgan answered by striking out R.J. Shields, but Venice managed to tie the game on an RBI single from Maddox Volk.
Following another single from Kohen Poplin, Morgan handed the ball over after throwing a tremendous 104 pitches against an elite lineup. Reliever Colt Miller entered the high-stakes situation, but Venice capitalized on their late-game momentum. August Backman drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single, which was the home team’s fourth hit of an inning where they had previously recorded just three hits all game. A subsequent balk with the bases loaded brought in an insurance run for the opposition, capping a three-run rally that shifted the final outcome.
In the final frame, Venice’s Carter Cox returned to the mound to close out his complete game, retiring Hudson Schlitt, Jaxon Pomar, and Colt Miller in order.
