Vero Beach is officially home to a groundbreaking new environmental initiative. Circular Services has announced the opening of a state-of-the-art food and beverage de-packaging facility right here in Indian River County. Marking a major milestone for sustainability in the Sunshine State, this site is the very first of its kind in Florida and the only commercial-scale de-packaging operation currently permitted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
For years, Florida’s rapidly expanding food and beverage manufacturing sector faced a significant logistical hurdle: dealing with damaged or expired packaged goods. Historically, the only option for these businesses was to send this material to local landfills or incinerators, incurring hefty disposal fees and contributing to environmental waste. The new Vero Beach facility provides a much-needed, economically viable, and eco-friendly alternative.
Here is what makes the new Vero Beach operation so impactful for the local and state economy:
- Massive Processing Capacity: The facility is equipped to handle more than 600 tons of food and beverage material every single week.
- Advanced Separation Technology: The system efficiently separates the outer packaging from the organic contents, allowing the packaging to be properly recycled rather than discarded.
- Local Composting Integration: The extracted organic waste is diverted directly to Circular Services’ co-located composting site in Vero Beach, where it is transformed into valuable agricultural and landscaping materials.
As Florida’s largest composter and a major player in the state’s recycling industry, Circular Services already operates facilities across Greater Tampa, Sarasota, Lee County, and Palm Beach County. However, the Vero Beach site introduces a specialized capability that addresses a unique gap in the commercial waste management cycle.
“This expansion brings a much-needed comprehensive food waste recovery system to Florida. With proper separation of the packaging from the organic material, the result is clean, nutrient-rich compost. That’s what the circular economy looks like in practice, and it’s the standard we hold ourselves to at every facility we operate.” – David Bahrenburg, Vice President of Organics at Circular Services
By creating high-quality compost, mulches, and soils tailored for residential and commercial growing, the Vero Beach facility is actively turning corporate waste into a resource that benefits local agriculture and green spaces on the Treasure Coast.
“In Vero Beach, we’ve built something that keeps both food waste and packaging materials where they belong — in circulation, not landfills — and gives Florida’s commercial generators the local partner they’ve needed to make that a reality.” – Jessica Long, Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Operating Officer
This innovative development not only positions Vero Beach as a leader in Florida’s green economy but also provides a vital commercial service that keeps the local environment cleaner while helping regional businesses operate more sustainably.
