It has become a modern-day rite of passage, but recently, concrete data was compiled to reveal just how often this actually happens in our area. According to a comprehensive study by The Action Network, residents across Vero Beach and the wider Treasure Coast face some frustrating odds when it comes to securing their favorite frozen treats.
Using publicly available reports stretching from October 2020 through July 2026, researchers tracked the operational status of McDonald’s ice cream machines across 492 cities nationwide. The data highlights exactly where Florida communities, including our own Indian River County, stand compared to the national average machine downtime rate of 10.4 percent.
For locals living in and commuting through Vero Beach, the odds of encountering a broken machine are unfortunately higher than the national average.
- Vero Beach Ranking: The city placed No. 201 out of the 492 cities tracked in the nationwide study.
- Downtime: Across six Vero Beach McDonald’s locations, machines were reported down 16.6 percent of the time.
- Success Rate: Customers pulling up to the window have an 83.4 percent chance of the ice cream machine actually working.
How does the rest of the Treasure Coast fare? It turns out, finding a working machine can be even more of a gamble just a short drive south of Vero Beach.
- Stuart: Stuart holds the unfortunate title of having the 16th-worst odds nationwide and the worst odds in the entire state of Florida. Across five locations, machines were down a staggering 33.8 percent of the time. This means Stuart residents are more than three times as likely to face a broken machine than the average American.
- Fort Pierce: Ranking No. 70 nationally, Fort Pierce locations saw machines down 24 percent of the time across five local restaurants.
- Port St. Lucie: Ranked No. 207, with an ice cream machine downtime of 16.4 percent across eight locations, nearly mirroring Vero Beach’s statistics.
Florida McDonald’s ice cream machines work 77.7 percent of the time on average, meaning the odds of a machine being down are 22.3 percent statewide. This places Florida squarely in the middle of the study’s odds—somewhere between highly reliable and highly risky.
While Stuart took the top spot for the worst odds in Florida, other cities that made the top of the broken-machine list include Tallahassee with a 30.3 percent downtime rate and Gainesville with a 30.2 percent downtime rate.
