Vero Beach’s storied aerospace sector is officially expanding with the arrival of Catalina Aircraft Company. The manufacturer has launched operations on the Treasure Coast to develop a highly anticipated, transport-class amphibious aircraft platform, signaling a significant addition to the local aviation and manufacturing cluster.

The company is currently developing the Catalina SPAR™, an FAA Part 25 aircraft uniquely engineered to operate seamlessly from both land and water. This innovative platform is designed for coastal, island, and remote environments, allowing operators to move personnel, heavy cargo, and mission equipment entirely independent of traditional airport runways. According to the developers, the single adaptable system will support a variety of critical missions, including:

  • Commercial and government transport
  • Advanced maritime patrol
  • Aerial firefighting
  • Emergency search and rescue operations

The strategic decision to establish operations in Indian River County was heavily influenced by the region’s strong aerospace foundation. The area boasts a rich aviation history dating back to its former role as a U.S. Naval Air Station and its ongoing legacy as the home of Piper Aircraft.

The Catalina name represents the most capable amphibious aircraft ever built. We’re carrying that forward with a modern platform designed for today’s missions, and we believe Vero Beach is the right place to do it.

Benjamin Folger, CEO of Catalina Aircraft Company, specifically noted that the region’s existing aviation infrastructure and access to a highly trained local workforce made Vero Beach the ideal home for their new operations.

Built for long-range and extended operations, the modern aircraft aims to honor the famous World War II-era PBY Catalina flying boats, which were heavily utilized for long-range patrol and rescue missions. The new platform will boast an impressive maximum ferry range of approximately 3,200 nautical miles. Furthermore, the versatile aircraft is designed to accommodate up to 40 passengers or carry a massive payload exceeding 23,000 pounds.

While the company has not yet released specific timelines for production, total investment figures, or detailed local hiring projections, Catalina Aircraft has confirmed that development is actively underway with operators and suppliers. As the Catalina SPAR™ progresses, the company plans to steadily expand its presence in the Vero Beach area, promising to bring modern aerospace innovation and continued economic growth to the Treasure Coast.
