Treasure Coast Law Enforcement Assists in Major Transnational Jewelry Heist Takedown

In a massive win for regional and federal law enforcement, the Fort Pierce Police Department has successfully assisted federal agents in dismantling a highly organized, transnational robbery ring. The years-long investigation, officially dubbed Operation Boujee Bandits, concluded recently with the final sentencing of the crew’s remaining member, bringing closure to victims across South Florida and the wider Treasure Coast region.

The sweeping FBI-led operation targeted a Colombian-based theft group responsible for orchestrating violent robberies against jewelry couriers. According to federal officials, the sophisticated crew systematically followed jewelry salespeople from major commercial hubs, such as the Seybold Jewelry Building and the International Jewelry Exchange, before ambushing them—frequently utilizing weapons to force compliance.

This case highlights the importance of regional collaboration when dealing with organized, transnational crime.

The Investigation and Final Sentencing

The final defendant to face justice was Leroy Ortega, a 43-year-old Miami resident known by the alias “el Enano.” Ortega was recently sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for his direct involvement in the string of heists. With Ortega’s sentencing, all 11 defendants connected to the robbery crew have now been legally processed and penalized.

Collectively, the criminal enterprise was responsible for staggering financial damages, with over $5 million in jewelry merchandise stolen. Court records reveal the violent nature of these crimes, highlighting a specific 2019 incident where a victim suffered injuries after being dragged by the criminals’ getaway vehicle. In a separate incident, a single jewelry salesman was robbed of approximately $125,000 in merchandise.

A Direct Treasure Coast Connection

While a significant portion of the criminal activity was initially concentrated in Miami-Dade County, the syndicate’s reach rapidly expanded northward, threatening communities along Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast. Recognizing the growing regional threat, local agencies stepped up to protect their jurisdictions.

The Fort Pierce Police Department, working closely with the Boca Raton Police Department and other local entities, played a crucial role in bringing the federal case to a close. Local officers provided essential multi-agency support by:

  • Tracking the criminal group’s movements as they traveled throughout the region.
  • Sharing critical intelligence and data across jurisdictional lines.
  • Supporting the broader federal investigation that ultimately captured the 11 defendants.

This successful multi-agency collaboration stands as a powerful reminder of the dedication of Treasure Coast law enforcement to keep our local communities safe from organized, transnational criminal networks.
