The Vero Beach High School football program is officially back on the gridiron, channeling the heartbreak of a devastating postseason finish into fresh motivation. Welcoming 102 prospective players to the field for spring practice, the team is focused on rebuilding, refining fundamentals, and moving past a historic Class 7A state championship defeat.

Last season concluded with an impressive 14-1 record, but the lone loss has undoubtedly lingered for the Vero Beach community. The team fell to Lake Mary High in the final seconds of the state title game. After a strategic safety and a subsequent kickoff in the final minute, Lake Mary executed a miraculous, game-tying Hail Mary pass and lateral, followed by a game-winning PAT as time expired. Head Coach Lenny Jankowski took full responsibility for the communication and special teams challenges during those final moments, noting that while the loss was an agonizing end to an incredible season, it is time to turn the page.

“Here’s what I know: there’s not one run play, there’s not one completion, there’s not one tackle, not one interception, one coaching decision that carries over into this season,” Jankowski emphasized, reinforcing a forward-looking mindset for his coaching staff and players.

As spring drills commence, the Vero Beach roster is undergoing significant changes. The program must overcome the departure of 30 seniors, many of whom were foundational leaders who took the majority of snaps during the team’s dominant run last year. Filling these leadership voids is a top priority for the coaching staff.

Key roster developments for the spring include:

  • Rebuilding the Offensive Line: The coaching staff is working to replace eight graduated seniors who previously anchored the offensive trenches.
  • Revamping the Linebacker Corps: This was another senior-heavy position last year that now requires younger players to elevate their roles.
  • Integrating Key Transfers: The defense expects a boost from new additions, including defensive end Jake Tell, who joins the roster from Jensen Beach High, and linebacker Deion Jackson, who transferred from Legacy in Port St. Lucie.

At the helm of the offense is returning quarterback Wonderful Champ Monds IV. Despite battling injuries that sidelined him for portions of the regular season and playoffs last year, Monds returned for the state title game, throwing for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Now entering his senior season, the highly touted prospect is stepping into a primary leadership role while simultaneously preparing to announce his highly anticipated college decision.

Looking Ahead to the Spring Finale
Rather than participating in a traditional spring classic against an external opponent, Vero Beach is dedicating this period entirely to internal development. The team will continue to practice Monday through Thursday, culminating in an intrasquad showcase scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on May 21 at the Citrus Bowl.

With an exceptional coaching staff, a deep well of local talent, and strong community backing, Vero Beach football is focused on translating past adversity into future triumphs on the Treasure Coast.
