The high school lacrosse postseason on the Treasure Coast has been fiercely competitive, but as the dust settles on the regional brackets, only one local Indian River County powerhouse remains in the hunt for a state championship. The Vero Beach High School girls lacrosse team has staged an incredible late-season turnaround, standing alone as the region’s final contender.

Under the guidance of first-year head coach Gabriella McKay, the Vero Beach girls lacrosse team transformed a struggling 4-10 regular season into a dominant playoff run, heavily outscoring their opponents to advance to the regional finals.

While Vero Beach is historically recognized for its glowing lacrosse pedigree, the current squad has charted a uniquely resilient path. The team recently overwhelmed the Stoneman Douglas Eagles with a stunning 17-3 victory on the road in Parkland, securing their spot in the Region 4-2A title game. The journey is particularly impressive given their slow start to the year. Flipping the script when it mattered most, Vero Beach has won six of their last seven matchups. Riding a five-game winning streak since the start of districts, the girls have outscored their opponents by a massive combined margin of 69-15.

They now sit just three wins away from a state title. Standing in their way is top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas. The two teams will battle in Fort Lauderdale, setting the stage for a highly anticipated rematch of last season’s regional final, where Vero Beach secured a tight 7-6 victory.

For other local programs, the playoff journey has officially come to a close. The St. Edward’s School girls team wrapped up a strong 14-5 campaign after falling to top-seeded American Heritage in the Region 4-1A Semifinal. Despite the season-ending loss, the Pirates recently celebrated a massive 11-6 victory to avenge a previous district title defeat. The program will bid farewell to a dedicated class of five seniors: Caitlin Moscrip, Kelly Lynch, Aerin Russell, Madeline Richards, and C.J. Fykes.

The St. Edward’s boys team also concluded their season, falling to the Benjamin Buccaneers in the Region 2-1A Semifinal. Standout senior Connor O’Brien finished a stellar prep career, having previously posted two goals and seven assists during an outstanding quarterfinal win over The First Academy.

Meanwhile, the Vero Beach boys lacrosse team saw their postseason end in the Region 2-2A Semifinal against top-ranked Winter Park. Despite falling 14-4 on the road, the team proudly captured its fifth consecutive district championship earlier in the year. Key performances in their final regional matchup included:

  • Tayton Farrow: The senior netted two crucial goals for the Vero Beach offense.
  • Austin Banzhaf and Henry DiLella: Both players contributed significantly, each walking away with a goal and an assist.
  • Liam Watson: The sophomore recorded an impressive 14 saves in goal.
  • Dominic Foderaro: Secured seven face-off wins and collected four ground balls.

Rounding out the regional action, the Jensen Beach girls team was eliminated in the Region 4-1A Quarterfinal by Pine Crest. The Falcons played without their senior star and South Florida signee Kai Valko, who had been sidelined following a concussion earlier in the month.

As the season winds down for the rest of the Treasure Coast, the local sports community now turns its full attention to the Vero Beach girls team as they push forward in their resilient quest for another Florida state title.
