Vero Beach Resident Apprehended in Treasure Coast Homicide Investigation
A tragic incident in neighboring St. Lucie County has resulted in the arrest of a Vero Beach man. Local law enforcement officials have officially charged a 20-year-old Indian River County resident in connection with the fatal shooting of a Fort Pierce pawn shop manager.
The fatal encounter took place on Tuesday evening, shortly after 7:00 p.m. Fort Pierce Police officers were dispatched to Cash Out Gold and Silver, located at 4603 South U.S. Highway 1. Upon arrival, authorities discovered the 35-year-old female store manager on the floor surrounded by blood. Authorities were initially alerted to the situation after a concerned employee from another store location called 911 when the manager could not be reached by phone.
Investigators determined that two men entered the business. One of them shot the manager multiple times before the pair fled.
Following a rapid response, law enforcement worked to track the flight path of the suspects. Police Chief David Smith announced during a Wednesday news conference that officers traced a suspect’s route to an area just off Interstate 95. During this targeted search, investigators successfully recovered critical discarded items, including a firearm and a gun magazine.
This physical evidence directly contributed to the Wednesday afternoon apprehension of Landen Julian Ballard, 20, of Vero Beach. Ballard was taken into custody in Fort Pierce and is currently facing severe felony offenses. The official charges filed against the Vero Beach man include:
- First-Degree Murder: A severe capital charge indicating direct involvement in the fatal shooting.
- Tampering with Physical Evidence: Stemming from the discarded weapon and magazine located near the interstate.
- Violation of Probation: Indicating prior entanglements with the justice system before this week’s events.
The victim, whose name has not yet been publicly released by authorities pending family notification, was a resident of Palm Beach County. According to Chief Smith, there is currently no evidence to suggest that the victim and the suspects knew each other prior to the violent encounter.
While one suspect is firmly in custody, the investigation remains highly active. Fort Pierce Police detectives are actively working to identify and locate the second male suspect who entered the store on Tuesday night.
The Cash Out Gold and Silver storefront remains closed to the public, with a notice posted on the door stating it will remain shuttered until further notice. Authorities are urging anyone in the Vero Beach, Fort Pierce, or the wider Treasure Coast region who may have details regarding the second unidentified suspect or the incident itself to come forward. Community members with information are asked to contact the Fort Pierce Police Department directly at 772-462-6800.
